Earlier this year, Health New Zealand worked alongside local community partners to deliver Tō Waha Te Ikaroa – a regional initiative providing acute dental care across five central districts including Wairarapa.

Designed as a targeted, short-term effort for adults experiencing dental pain, the pop-up clinics brought together volunteer clinicians, local community and private dental clinics, and community health teams.

Over 17 clinic days across the central region, the initiative achieved:
🆓 $450,000 in estimated urgent dental care provided to 600 whānau.
🙋‍♀️ 86 MOVE volunteers deployed across the region, with 94% rating their volunteer experience as excellent (5/5)!
🤝 338 whānau connected on-site to wider health support, including immunisations.
The initiative highlighted how effective regional collaboration and volunteer mobilisation can be in addressing urgent health needs directly within communities.

Thank you to all the clinicians, host facilities, healthcare workers, and regional partners who contributed their time and expertise to make this initiative possible.

💙Bowel screening now starts at age 56 in Wairarapa 💙

⭐This was one of the important messages our bowel screening team shared with visitors at the recent Ageing with Attitude Expo in Masterton.

💫The team was on hand to talk about the lowering of the starting age from 58 to 56, explain how the simple at-home test works, and answer any questions.

⭐Bella the Bowel, our giant inflatable colon, also helped get conversations started!

💫If you’re aged 56 to 74, look out for your bowel screening kit in the mail.

✅Take the test when it arrives. It’s free, simple and can be done at home.

Wairarapa is one of eight districts leading the way with the starting age for free bowel screening lowering from 58 to 56, making more than 1,100 additional people eligible locally each year.

Did you know there is a free immunisation clinic held at Masterton Intermediate every Thursday between 3pm and 6pm?

With a measles case confirmed in Wellington last week, and one of the locations of interest being in Masterton, it is a timely reminder to ensure you are up to date with all your vaccines. Find out more here: https://www.healthnz.govt.nz/health-alerts/measles-in-wellington

Measles case confirmed in Wellington linked to recent international travel.

We are supporting the person and their close contacts to help prevent further spread of the highly contagious disease and is identifying locations of interest where the person visited while infectious.

Measles symptoms can include:

🤒 Fever
😷 Cough
👃 Runny nose
👀 Red eyes
🔴 A rash that starts on the face

The best protection against measles is 2 doses of the MMR vaccine.

⏰ Meningococcal disease can happen very fast, sometimes in just a few hours, and it can be very serious. One of the problems it can cause is meningitis, which is an infection of the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord. 🧠

In this video, Dr. Stacey, a Public Health Medicine Registrar, talks about the signs and symptoms to watch for and what to do if someone shows signs of meningococcal disease.

Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect against meningococcal disease, and some vaccines are free for certain age groups such as children under 5 or young people ages 13 to 25 years old in their first year of close-living situations like uni halls or boarding school.
