⭐Today is Safe Sleep Day - for babies ⭐

🐣It's an oppportunity to raise awareness of the need to ensure every pēpi has a safe sleep, every time.

🥰At Wairarapa Hospital our midwifery team is proud to promote and support safe sleep for babies.

🌸Every day they share knowledge and guidance with parents and whānau around the four Foundations for Safe Sleep:

❣️Face up, face clear – always place pēpi on their back, with no pillows, toys or loose blankets.

❣️Flat and firm – use a flat bed and mattress with firm sides such as pēpi-pod, wahakura or bassinet.

❣️Free – provide a smoke, v**e, alcohol and drug-free environment.

❣️Fathers and family – can help support and encourage breastfeeding as a protective factor, as well as help protect babies during every sleep.

Founded by Hāpai Te Hauora, the Foundations for Safe Sleep provide a practical framework that helps health professionals, parents and whānau create safe sleep environments in everyday life.

Celebrating International Midwives’ Day 💙

Today we recognise the incredible difference our midwives make for wāhine, pēpi and whānau every day. From pregnancy through birth and beyond, they walk alongside families at some of life’s most important moments.

This year’s theme, ‘One Million More Midwives’, is a global call to grow and support the midwifery workforce – so more families can access safe, high-quality care when they need it most.

To all our amazing midwives: thank you for your skill, compassion and dedication. We appreciate everything you do! 👶✨

Meet our new Violence Reduction Specialists – Olly Va’alepu and Alana Jones 👋

After close to a decade as nurses at Wellington Hospital, Olly and Alana are now supporting our frontline teams across Capital, Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa to stay safe at work.

They train staff in practical skills like verbal de-escalation, situational awareness and safe breakaway techniques – helping them feel confident and prepared if situations become challenging.

Everyone deserves to feel safe at work and most people who use our services treat staff with respect – we really value that. For the rare times things escalate, it’s important our teams have the right tools and support.

Because looking after our people helps them look after you. ❤
