An Unforgettable Afternoon with Steven Adams! 🏀
Today was special day for some of our amazing ākonga!
We were incredibly lucky to be gifted 6 tickets for some of our NIS kids to attend the Steven Adams Basketball Camp—a fantastic initiative where NBA legend Steven Adams travels around Aotearoa to create pathways and inspire the next generation of Kiwi talent.
Our kaiako had the tough job of nominating six students- NIS kids who show heart, dedication, and who might not usually get an opportunity like this.
They spent an awesome afternoon:

Getting up close with a Kiwi kid who chased his dreams all the way to the NBA was inspirational! The kids headed home with a singlet, a brand-new basketball, and a bag full of Meadow Fresh goodies! Seeing our ākonga inspired, smiling, and realising that big dreams are totally possible for Kiwi kids was the absolute highlight of the day.

A massive THANK YOU to Justine and Zak for your incredible support in making this happen for our kids. We are so grateful for your generosity and belief in our community! ❤️

Huge thanks to JP, Emma, and the team for bringing their latest education workshop to Nelson Intermediate! 🔬 Our ākonga had opportunity to explore the Cawthron Climate Change Solutions workshop, which empowered them to see how science applies directly to our local challenges and opportunities.

Throughout the day, our students got to: 🦪 Monitor mussel heartbeats to see environmental impacts in real-time 🌱 Discover the vital importance of seagrass restoration in our marine ecosystems 🧪 Try their hand at paper chromatography to reveal hidden plant pigments

Hands-on experiences like these enrich the learning, curiosity, and positive attitudes we celebrate and hold dear for our NIS kids.Thank you so much to the Cawthron team for joining us for the day and inspiring our future scientists! 💙🙌

NIS bands Fire Hazard and Internal Breakdown are getting ready for Rockshop Bandquest in August 2026!

Performing at the school assembly is a great way to get stage experience. Fire Hazard played a classic song by green day: “when I come around”. Internal breakdown used this opportunity to present their original song ATTLA, a song “that talks about sadness and centuries of darkness “

Today, our school was filled with incredible music as we hosted a special performance by the combined Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls and Nayland College Official Student Jazz Big Bands! As part of the Nelson Jazz Festival, these talented young musicians visited our kura to share their love of music and show our ākonga just how much fun playing an instrument can be.

The visiting students took time to introduce all the different instruments that make up a big band and our ākonga had an opportunity to learn about everything from the steady rhythm of the drums and guitars to the bright, powerful sounds of the saxophones, trumpets, and trombones.

It was especially exciting to see how modern jazz incorporates cool new sounds, like lively Latin percussion and digital synthesisers! We want to extend a huge thank you to the Nelson Jazz Festival and the inspiring Nelson College students for spending time with us today.

What a way to kick off the term! Today’s school assembly welcomed all of our students back with an incredible guest speaker. We were incredibly lucky to host Julian Matthews, an ex-Commonwealth Games runner! 🇬🇧👟
He shared some amazing insights into what it takes to compete on the world stage, which fits perfectly with our learning this term. For the first five weeks, our school-wide inquiry is centering largely around the Commonwealth Games—so having Julian here was the perfect way for students to connect directly with the theme!
A massive THANK YOU to Eli and Jack for doing an outstanding job making Julian feel welcome and for putting some really interesting questions to him for the whole assembly to hear. You represented our school beautifully!
