✨ Celebrating 75 Years of Nelson Intermediate School! ✨

Today’s 75th Jubilee Assembly was a truly special walk down memory lane as we welcomed our ex-Nelson Intermediate kids, teachers and tumuaki back through the doors to reconnect with friends, teachers, and the spaces that helped shape who they are today.

A massive thank you to Hugh Gully, who joined us as our featured speaker. Having been an ex-student, teacher, AND principal of Nelson Intermediate, Hugh lit up the stage with a few wonderful (and very entertaining!) tall tales that kept both our current students and our alumni on the edge of their seats.

One of the most touching aspects of the day was seeing the deep, multi-generational roots in our community. We were honoured to welcome families like Ivan and Val Banks, whose legacy at NIS spans generations with their own children and grandchildren having walked these same halls. It was also wonderful chatting with Avon and Judith Wastney, who attended in the early 1960s. Judith, who served as a school prefect back then, was one of many who planted one of the three grand trees that still stand proud on our front forecourt today! 🌳

After the assembly, our past students were escorted around the school by our current pupils to revisit some of their favourite haunts—from the hard tech spaces and food tech room (and its iconic model flat!), to the classrooms, library, and playground. Watching our current Nelson Intermediate kids guide our alumni with such wonder and curiosity about education in the past was a was an epic experience for everyone involved.

We capped off the morning with a shared morning tea, a group photo in front of the main block, and a trip through history in our 75th Jubilee museum filled with incredible memorabilia and artifacts. 📸📜

Thank you to every single person who attended and made today so unforgettable. Once a NIS Kids, always a NIS Kid!🙌

🐧 Kaitiakitanga in Action: Nelson Intermediate Students Protecting Our Kororā! 💙
Over the past year, a passionate group of students from Nelson Intermediate has been stepping up as true guardians of our local wildlife!
They’ve been working alongside the Nelson City Council, Nelson Yacht Club, Otago Marine Science, and amazing community experts to study the little blue penguins (kororā) nesting right beneath the yacht club. Here’s a look at what our young scientists have achieved:
🐕 Studied Human Impact: Researched how local activity—especially dogs near nesting spaces—affects these vulnerable birds.
🛠️ Built Nesting Boxes: Crafted custom wooden nest boxes (being installed shortly!) to provide safer homes for breeding season.
🔍 Field Research: Visited an active nesting site to see fledging chicks, explore nest box designs in action, and learn how scientists use microchipping to track penguin populations.

Seeing science and conservation come together shows what’s possible when our community works as one. Our students are paving the way to help boost kororā numbers along our busy blue belt over the next 20 years! 🌊💙

Three incredible days at the Top of the South Mountain Bike Champs with our NIS team.
With over 100 riders hit by literally every type of weather, our 17-strong crew tackled both Cross Country and Enduro like absolute champs. From seasoned racers to first-timers taking on their very first event, every single rider gave it their all—even through yesterday’s torrential storm.
The best part? The legendary team spirit. The cheers across the course were loud, the support for one another was constant, and despite the mud and rain, the grins were massive.
A massive shoutout to our podium finishers:
Isla Stuart – 3rd Place (Year 8 Girls Cross Country) 🥉
Zella Barker – 1st Place (Year 7 Girls Cross Country) 🥇 & 3rd Place (Enduro) 🥉
A heartfelt thank you to all the whānau who braved the elements to cheer, hand out snacks, and support the team. Huge gratitude as well to Renwick School and the Marlborough MTB Club for putting on such a fantastic, memorable event for our kids.

Huge congratulations to our two incredible teams, The Masterminds and The Cuckoo Bananas, for taking on the interschool EPro8 challenge! 🛠️

Both teams were handed three brand-new engineering tasks that tested everything they had: complex math, following intricate instructions, and some serious problem-solving and tenacity.

It was beyond cool to watch these kids stay laser-focused for three full hours, putting their heads together to build structures and systems they’d never even seen before!

🏆 Special shoutout to The Masterminds, who qualified to move on to the Grand Final tomorrow!

Past and present collided in the sweetest way at school this week! 💛

I’ll be honest—I was a little nervous about inviting our NIS alumni back to visit. With a 60- to 70-year generation gap, I couldn't help but wonder: how would today's students relate to stories from so long ago?

I shouldn't have worried for a second.

Our incredible guests—Wendy Connolly (Head Prefect in 1966 and 1967), Ken, Graeme, Kay, Heather, and Ian—had an absolute ball sharing what school life was like six decades ago. They swapped stories about everything from scratchy flannel shirts, white gloves, and panama hats to tech class projects, the model flat, favourite teachers, playground games, and even old-school discipline!

Our alumni were blown away by how welcoming our students were—praising their thoughtful questions, active listening, and genuine respect. Watching a few of the interviews myself, I was super impressed!

Our kids have been exceptional hosts, and it has been pure magic watching these generations connect. I can't wait to see what else we learn together! 🌟📚✨

🌟 Bake Sale Success! 🧁✨
Our school community has done it again! A massive shout-out to the 20+ wonderful tamariki who spent their evening baking up a storm at home, all to support a cause close to many of our hearts.

Thanks to their hard work—and to everyone who came along today to buy a sweet treat—we raised an incredible $520 for the Nelson Cancer Society! 💛

Moments like this show just how generous, caring, and connected our school whānau really is. Thank you to our talented bakers, our eager buyers, and everyone who supported this bake sale. You've made us super proud! 👏🍰
