Today, our students had the absolute privilege of spending the afternoon on-site at the Coastal View Retirement Village, and it was an absolute blast!

They played a variety of different games designed to stretch, challenge, and extend both the minds and bodies of everyone playing. The energy, laughter, and connections made across generations were truly special to witness.

To our amazing kids- Your willingness to serve, show up, and give your time to our community is what makes events like this possible.❤️✨

A huge congratulations to Hazel and Bulut on their latest review through the Young Readers Programme. Their enthusiasm for reading, thoughtful responses, and commitment to sharing their opinions about books continue to impress. Through their reviews, they have demonstrated excellent critical thinking skills and a genuine passion for literature.

We are incredibly proud of the effort they have put into reading and reviewing books, helping other young readers discover new stories and authors along the way. Keep up the fantastic work, Hazel and Bulut – we look forward to seeing what books you explore next!

FROM NELSON TO WASHINGTON DC: THE ULTIMATE STEAM DREAM!

What an absolutely incredible journey it has been for our amazing team of Aquabotters representing Whakatū Nelson! From humble beginnings of pure curiosity and a "give-it-a-go" attitude in the Nelson Intermediate School (NIS) Enrichment programme 2024-2025, these ex-NIS kids have spent the last 2.5 years proving what grit, innovation, and teamwork can achieve.

This wasn't just about building a robot; it was a massive 2-years of engineering. Constantly testing, failing, redesigning, and refining their Aquabot form. Writing and presenting their learning journey, justifying every single design choice to expert judges. Qualifying at regional events and qualifying for Nationals two years in a row!

✈️ Living the STEAM Dream in the USA
When they qualified for the International SeaPerch Competition in the USA, it wasn’t a decision made lightly. It took months of relentless fundraising, intense preparation, and extra drive training. But as you can see from these photos—it was worth every single moment! 👇 The team traveled to Washington DC, maximising every opportunity by "geeking out" at the incredible Smithsonian museums and the DC Zoo.

Then came the main event: competing against 210 teams from all over the globe, including Kazakhstan, China, Kenya, and the USA. Our kids truly lived the STEAM dream—checking out international designs, socialising with fellow young innovators, and proudly presenting their own journey on the world stage.

💡 A Heartfelt Thank You! Success like this takes a village, and we have some very important people to thank:
- A huge shout-out to every single member who contributed to this team over the last 2.5 years.
- A Special Mention to Oliver: An integral part of Team Placeholder. Oliver contributed significantly to the preparation of this International team, and though he was unable to travel this time, this milestone belongs to him too!

🤝 Thank You to Our Incredible Community & Sponsors!
We are grateful to the local businesses and legends who put their faith (and funds!) behind these kids to make the impossible, possible: ECAD, Port Nelson, The Legal House, Fuel Cards, Cable Bay Adventure Park, Smart Business Centre, Cool Store ...and every single person who bought a treat at our bake sales or ordered a firewood drop!

Nothing to see here... just a bunch of future marine engineers designing and testing out their Aquabot and pushing their design skills to the limit! 🌊🤖

It was absolutely incredible to see so many kids fully engaged, locked in, and giving 100% effort these past weeks. From design choices to the buoyancy tests, they will need to do a pool test before determining their next remote-controlled underwater robots are going to be fit for

This week, we’ve shared some big, honest conversations with our students about why unkindness happens. We’ve focused on being an Upstander—someone who has the courage to speak up when something isn't right. We know that stepping in can feel awkward or even a bit scary for young people, but it’s a skill we can practice together. Even as the week ends, we’re committed to keeping this conversation alive, modeling empathy, and building a school culture where everyone feels they belong and be themselves.

To celebrate our commitment to kindness, many of us wore Pink today! Upstander vibes. 💖
