Our amazing Community Navigator, Norma Sequera, recently worked with the Nelson Tasman Response Team 2 (NZ-RT2), a team governed by the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, to run an Emergency Preparedness and Response activity with Spanish-speaking former refugees and migrants.

The recent earthquakes in Colombia and Venezuela highlighted how important it is for communities to understand what to do and where to seek help during an emergency. The session covered practical questions such as: What should we do in an emergency? Where should we go? Who can help us? How can we protect ourselves and our families?

A wonderful initiative that shared important info with local people. The intention now is to work with other former refugee and migrant communities to share these messages more widely.

Still time to get involved in Whakanuia Te Ao Māori here at the Community Centre on Rāhoroi / Saturday.

An amazing opportunity being run by our friends at Te Korowai Trust during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori! Awesome mahi team! Ka nui tō mātou mihi ki tō pukumahi!

You’re invited to celebrate and learn Te Reo Māori through seven different kaupapa: Rongoā, Taonga Pūoro (Pūrākau), Taonga Pūoro (making), Raranga, Poi, Whakatere Waka and Mau Rakau. Choose two you would like to attend. That’s a tricky decision to make!

Shout out to the awesome Robin Goetzke and the team from Change Real Estate who sponsor our mahi in the community garden. When we spoke about sponsorship Robin was excited when he heard the opportunity to support the garden, the vision of a place for people to grow together, not only kai, but community connections and knowledge too. Come along for a free, fun day for the whole family at Victory Community Centre!

There’ll be plenty happening for the kids, including a bouncy castle, face painting and other activities, plus a free sausage sizzle. 🌭🎨

You can also get friendly, practical information about voting in Aotearoa New Zealand, including how to enrol, who can enrol, and how voting works. Interpreting support will be available.

Whether voting in New Zealand is new to you, you have questions, or you simply want to bring the whānau along for a fun day, you are very welcome.

Free and open to everyone.

An appreciation post to our amazing amigos at the Nelson Environment Centre who run Kai Rescue. The graphic at the start of this video illustrating the breadth of their community support is very impressive. We would not be able to support our community in the way that we do without their incredible help each week. Massive thanks to Katie, Andrew, Kelli and the team for all the mahi they do to stop kai being wasted and feeding local people instead. Legends.
