🚒 Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade – August Call Summary 🚒

August kept our volunteers busy, with 15 callouts throughout the month.

Our August breakdown:
🏠 5 structure fires
🌿 4 vegetation fires
🔥 4 miscellaneous fires
🚗 1 motor vehicle accident
🔔 1 alarm activation

With 9 of our 15 callouts involving fires, it was certainly a busy month for the crew! 🔥🚒

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who continue to answer the pager, whether it’s during the day, in the middle of the night, or when they’d much rather be tucked up warm at home. 😴😂

We also appreciate the ongoing support from our families, employers, neighbouring brigades, and the wider community. It all helps us continue to be there when we’re needed.

Hopefully September gives the trucks a little more time to cool down! 🚒❤️

🚒 Weston Fire Brigade hates encores! 🚒

No, we’re not talking about our favourite bands… we’re talking about having to return to the scene of a fire we’ve already attended! 🔥😅

The other night, a combination of unfavourable weather conditions and some pretty challenging terrain meant our crews had to make a return trip to a fire we’d already attended.

While we’re always happy to help our community, an encore is definitely not our preferred way to spend the evening!

The good news is, there are a few simple things you can do to help us avoid those encore performances:

🌬️ Check the weather conditions before lighting an outdoor fire — even during an open-fire season.

💧 Make sure your fire is completely extinguished before you leave. Don’t just rely on the flames disappearing; fires can smoulder and reignite long after they appear to be out.

👀 Keep an eye on your fire and make sure it stays under control. Never leave it unattended, and have plenty of water or suitable firefighting equipment close by.

A few simple precautions can make a big difference — and could help give our volunteers a few more nights at home instead of another trip out in the fire truck! 😂🚒

Let’s keep the encores for the concerts, not the fireground. 🔥🎶

Every time the pager goes off, our volunteers drop what they’re doing and answer the call. But we’re always looking for more people to join the team!

🚒❤️ Could Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade be Brigade of the Year? 🏆

We don’t do what we do for recognition — we do it because we’re proud to serve our community. But every now and then, it’s nice to know that our efforts are appreciated!

As part of International Volunteer Year 2026, UFBA is giving communities the opportunity to recognise their local volunteer fire brigade through the Brigade of the Year awards.

Over the years, our volunteers have responded to emergencies, helped out at community events, attended training, provided advice, and answered the pager at all hours of the day and night.

🚒 Whew! What a busy few days we’ve had! 🚒

As you may have heard, our siren has been getting a bit of a workout, with 5 callouts over the past 3 days keeping our crews and trucks busy.

We’ve had a real mix of incidents:
🏠 2 structure fires
🔥 1 chimney fire
🌿 1 vegetation fire
🚑 1 lift assist

We’ve also had the opportunity to work alongside our neighbouring brigades from Oamaru, Kakanui, Waitaki, Hampden and Glenavy. It’s always great to see everyone working together and supporting each other when our communities need us.

Thankfully, across all five callouts, our crews were able to assist where needed and do what we do best — turn up, work together and help out. 👨‍🚒💪

A big thank you to all the volunteers who have given up their time over the past few days, and to the families and employers who continue to support them. ❤️🚒

Let’s hope the siren gets a little rest now! 😅

❄️🌨 Spring is just around the corner… but we’re not out of the winter woods yet! 🌨❄️

With snow and black ice still making an appearance across the region, it’s important to stay alert whenever you’re on the road. Just because the calendar is edging towards spring doesn’t mean winter has packed its bags!

If you’re heading out:
🚗 Slow down and drive to the conditions.
🧊 Be especially cautious on bridges, shaded areas, and rural roads where black ice can be difficult to spot.
❄️ Clear all ice and snow from your vehicle before setting off.
⏱️ Leave a little earlier so there’s no need to rush.

Remember, black ice is called black ice for a reason—you usually don’t see it until you’ve already found it!

🚒 Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade – July Call Summary 🚒

July was certainly one to remember, with our volunteers responding to 24 callouts throughout the month (one for the record books for Weston).

Our July breakdown:
🌧️ 14 weather-related incidents
🔔 4 alarm activations
🚗 3 motor vehicle accidents
🚒 1 vegetation fire
🔥 1 miscellaneous fire
🚑 1 medical response

The severe weather certainly kept us busy, making up more than half of our callouts for the month. From responding through the early hours of the morning to helping our community throughout the day, our volunteers answered every call with dedication and professionalism.

A huge thank you goes to our incredible crew, who continue to leave work, family dinners, warm beds, and everything in between whenever the pager sounds. We also extend our thanks to the families, employers, and neighbouring brigades who support our volunteers—it truly is a team effort.

Here’s hoping August is a little less busy (we don’t say the “q word” here)… but if not, we’ll be ready. 🚒❤️

🚒 Training Night at Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade 🚒

Last Thursday’s training was all about going back to basics.

Our crew spent the evening practising hose running, extending hose lines, and replacing burst lengths. While these skills might seem straightforward, they’re the building blocks of effective firefighting.

When the pager goes off, there isn’t time to stop and think. That’s why we regularly train the fundamentals—to ensure every task becomes second nature and we can work safely and efficiently under pressure.

A special mention also goes to brigade member Alice Perry, who turned up to training despite being injured and on crutches. While she wasn’t able to take part in the practical drills, her commitment to continuing to learn and support the crew is a great example of the dedication our volunteers show. We hope you’re back on your feet soon, Alice! 💙

They say practice makes perfect, and we’re committed to making sure we’re ready when our community needs us most. 👨‍🚒💪

🧸💙 A huge thank you to The Warehouse Ōāmaru for their generous donation of soft toys to Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade.

When our volunteers respond to an emergency, it’s often one of the toughest days in someone’s life. Sometimes, those emergencies involve children, and while we can’t take away what’s happened, we can help make a frightening situation just a little less overwhelming.

Thanks to The Warehouse Oamaru, we’ll now have a supply of cuddly companions on our fire appliance to give to children during incidents. It’s a small gesture, but one that can provide comfort, reassurance, and even a smile when it’s needed most.

When we approached The Warehouse with our idea and explained why these toys would mean so much, they were incredibly supportive and generously donated a wonderful collection of teddies for us to carry on the truck.

Your kindness and support will make a real difference to the youngest members of our community when they need it most.

From all of us at Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade, thank you, The Warehouse Oamaru, for helping us care for our community in more ways than one. ❤️🚒🧸

🥶 Brrr… it’s been a chilly few days! ❄️

With plenty more frosty mornings ahead, now’s the time to take a little extra care before hitting the road.

Remember to:
🚗 Fully defrost your windscreen before you leave—being able to see is a pretty important part of driving!
❄️ Drive to the conditions and watch out for black ice.
⏱️ Allow yourself a few extra minutes in the morning so there’s no need to rush.

Just because the road looks clear doesn’t mean it isn’t icy. Slow down, leave plenty of following distance, and take it easy.

Stay safe, keep warm… and we’d much rather see you grabbing your morning coffee than waving to us from the side of the road! 🚒☕😄
