🚒 Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade – July Call Summary 🚒

July was certainly one to remember, with our volunteers responding to 24 callouts throughout the month (one for the record books for Weston).

Our July breakdown:
🌧️ 14 weather-related incidents
🔔 4 alarm activations
🚗 3 motor vehicle accidents
🚒 1 vegetation fire
🔥 1 miscellaneous fire
🚑 1 medical response

The severe weather certainly kept us busy, making up more than half of our callouts for the month. From responding through the early hours of the morning to helping our community throughout the day, our volunteers answered every call with dedication and professionalism.

A huge thank you goes to our incredible crew, who continue to leave work, family dinners, warm beds, and everything in between whenever the pager sounds. We also extend our thanks to the families, employers, and neighbouring brigades who support our volunteers—it truly is a team effort.

Here’s hoping August is a little less busy (we don’t say the “q word” here)… but if not, we’ll be ready. 🚒❤️

🚒 Training Night at Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade 🚒

Last Thursday’s training was all about going back to basics.

Our crew spent the evening practising hose running, extending hose lines, and replacing burst lengths. While these skills might seem straightforward, they’re the building blocks of effective firefighting.

When the pager goes off, there isn’t time to stop and think. That’s why we regularly train the fundamentals—to ensure every task becomes second nature and we can work safely and efficiently under pressure.

A special mention also goes to brigade member Alice Perry, who turned up to training despite being injured and on crutches. While she wasn’t able to take part in the practical drills, her commitment to continuing to learn and support the crew is a great example of the dedication our volunteers show. We hope you’re back on your feet soon, Alice! 💙

They say practice makes perfect, and we’re committed to making sure we’re ready when our community needs us most. 👨‍🚒💪

🧸💙 A huge thank you to The Warehouse Ōāmaru for their generous donation of soft toys to Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade.

When our volunteers respond to an emergency, it’s often one of the toughest days in someone’s life. Sometimes, those emergencies involve children, and while we can’t take away what’s happened, we can help make a frightening situation just a little less overwhelming.

Thanks to The Warehouse Oamaru, we’ll now have a supply of cuddly companions on our fire appliance to give to children during incidents. It’s a small gesture, but one that can provide comfort, reassurance, and even a smile when it’s needed most.

When we approached The Warehouse with our idea and explained why these toys would mean so much, they were incredibly supportive and generously donated a wonderful collection of teddies for us to carry on the truck.

Your kindness and support will make a real difference to the youngest members of our community when they need it most.

From all of us at Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade, thank you, The Warehouse Oamaru, for helping us care for our community in more ways than one. ❤️🚒🧸

🥶 Brrr… it’s been a chilly few days! ❄️

With plenty more frosty mornings ahead, now’s the time to take a little extra care before hitting the road.

Remember to:
🚗 Fully defrost your windscreen before you leave—being able to see is a pretty important part of driving!
❄️ Drive to the conditions and watch out for black ice.
⏱️ Allow yourself a few extra minutes in the morning so there’s no need to rush.

Just because the road looks clear doesn’t mean it isn’t icy. Slow down, leave plenty of following distance, and take it easy.

Stay safe, keep warm… and we’d much rather see you grabbing your morning coffee than waving to us from the side of the road! 🚒☕😄

🌧️ What a couple of days it’s been! 🌧️

We’re certainly pleased to see the rain easing and a few patches of blue sky making an appearance. ☁️⛅

Over a 10-hour period yesterday, starting at 1:17am, Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to 16 callouts—possibly a brigade record! Of those, 14 were directly related to the severe weather, with a further 2 alarm activations.

A huge thank you goes to our neighbouring brigades at Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade and Waitaki Volunteer Fire Brigade for their support throughout the event. Working together meant we could respond quickly and safely to the many calls for assistance.

To everyone affected by the heavy rain and flooding, we hope you’ve managed to dry out, begin the clean-up, and recover from the damage. Our thoughts are with those who have had a difficult few days.

Finally, thank you to our dedicated volunteers, who left their beds in the early hours of the morning and spent the day helping our community. Your commitment and willingness to answer the call, no matter the conditions, never goes unnoticed. ❤️🚒

⚠️ 🌧️ Heavy rain warning 🌧️ ⚠️

⚠️ The MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for the coastal Otago area including Oamaru and Weston areas from 6am Sunday through till 9am Monday.
Before the weather system hits, make sure you take the time to clear your gutters and drains to give the water an easy path to follow.

🌧️ During the downpour, avoid low lying areas and driving if possible. Streams and rivers may rise rapidly, and driving conditions may become difficult.

💧 The forecast is expecting between 75mm and 100mm of rain with the heaviest falls likely between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Stay safe out there and keep dry! ☔️

🚒 Weston Fire Brigade – June 2026 Call Summary 🚒

June kept our volunteers on their toes, with 13 callouts across the month.

Our June breakdown:
🌿 5 vegetation fires
🔥 3 miscellaneous fires
🏠 3 structure fires
🚗 1 motor vehicle accident
🔔 1 alarm activation

Winter may have us all wanting to stay wrapped up inside, but when the pager goes off, our volunteers swap warm fires and hot dinners for firefighting gear and fire trucks.

A huge thank you to our dedicated crew for their commitment to serving the Weston community, day or night, rain or shine. We couldn’t do it without your hard work and the ongoing support of your families, employers, and loved ones.

And to the rest of the community—thank you for your continued support. Hopefully you only see us driving past with a friendly wave… because we’d much rather meet you at the supermarket than at an emergency! 🚒😄❤️

🚑🚒 If you happened to drive past the station a couple of Thursdays ago, you may have been surprised to see an ambulance parked in the fire truck bay!

Don’t worry—there wasn’t an emergency at the station. We were hosting a joint training session with the team from St John Oamaru.

Working alongside each other at incidents means it’s important that we understand not only our own equipment, but also the tools and capabilities of our emergency service partners. The St John team took the time to show us some of the equipment they use and how it helps them care for patients in often challenging situations.

These training opportunities are invaluable and help strengthen the relationships between our organisations, ensuring we can work together effectively when our community needs us most.

A big thank you to the St John Oamaru team for sharing their knowledge and spending the evening with us. We always enjoy the opportunity to learn from one another and build on the strong working relationship between our services. 👏
