The upgrades completed during Exercise Puk Puk 2026 will support PNGDF training and operations for years to come.

In this video, PNGDF contingent Second-in-Command, Captain Nathan Muli, reflects on the work completed at Igam Barracks and how the exercise has helped develop the skills and experience of PNGDF engineers.

Working alongside Australian, Fijian and New Zealand counterparts, PNGDF personnel gained valuable hands-on experience while delivering improved facilities for soldiers at Igam Barracks.

Exercises like Puk Puk demonstrate how the PNG-Australia Alliance is strengthening defence capability, enhancing readiness and building lasting professional relationships across the region.

A new chapter in Papua New Guinea Defence Force training has begun with the opening of the refurbished Goldie River Training Depot Area Theatre.

Officially opened by Papua New Guinea Secretary for Defence Mr Hari John Akipe and Australia's First Assistant Secretary for Pacific Infrastructure Ms Laura Darlington, the modern facility will support collective training, education and briefings for up to 300 trainees.

Through the Defence Cooperation Program, the PNG-Australia Alliance continues to invest in practical infrastructure that supports PNGDF's growth, readiness and future capability.

Exercise Puk Puk 2026 has delivered upgraded facilities at Igam Barracks, creating lasting benefits for the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF).

In this video, PNGDF Lance Corporal Michael Api shares his experience working alongside Australian Defence Force engineers on the Forward Operation Base (FOB) and the value of exchanging skills, experiences and culture throughout the exercise.

Exercise Puk Puk brings together defence personnel from PNG, Australia and regional partners to strengthen engineering capability and advance the PNG-Australia Alliance through practical cooperation and shared experience.

Thirty-five Correctional Services Officers from across Papua New Guinea are now better equipped to drive positive change after completing Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) training.

The training strengthens their ability to measure results, improve performance, and support evidence-based decision-making, helping advance PNG Correctional Service's RESET@50 reform agenda.

Supported through the PNGAus Partnership, this investment in people is building stronger institutions, promoting accountability, and improving rehabilitation and reintegration outcomes.

Together, Australia and PNG are supporting practical reforms that create safer communities and stronger services.

Australia is supporting construction of PNG Biosecurity Authority’s new Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) suite in Port Moresby, strengthening PNG’s ability to detect and respond to biosecurity threats.

Once completed, the facility will support faster local testing for pests and diseases, helping PNG detect outbreaks earlier and respond more quickly.

The facility will help protect agriculture, food supplies and livelihoods, while supporting trade and economic resilience.

Through this project, Australia is working with PNG to build a stronger and more modern national biosecurity system.

For cocoa farmers in East Sepik, solar dryers are changing the way families process their cocoa – and making a big difference, especially for women.

In Yangoru-Saussia District, farmers said traditional wood-fire drying meant hours of hard work collecting firewood and paying men to help.

Now, solar dryers are helping farmers reduce that workload, save money, and spend more time on their gardens, families, and other activities.

With 125 solar dryers constructed across East Sepik, the Australian Government, in collaboration with Outspan PNG Ltd, is supporting farmers to produce higher-quality, smoke-free cocoa for premium markets.

Smoke-free cocoa. Less firewood. More time. Better returns for farming families.
