Baguio City, July 30, 2026 โ The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-CAR, through DOST Baguio-Benguet, equipped micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), national government agencies (NGAs), academe, and other stakeholders with science-based knowledge to strengthen preparedness for natural hazards during the afternoon session of the Pag-sci-atan Forum held at Ritz Hotel, Baguio City.
The discussions focused on weather hazards, geologic hazards, hazard assessment, and disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation (DRR-CCA), highlighting how scientific information and technologies can help communities and businesses anticipate risks, protect lives and assets, and strengthen resilience against natural hazards and the impacts of climate change.
Engr. Hilario Esperanza, Assistant Chief of the Weather Services Section of DOST-PAGASA Baguio, discussed weather hazards such as thunderstorms, shearlines, monsoons, tropical cyclones, and storm surges. He explained how these weather systems develop and highlighted the importance of understanding tropical cyclone forecasts, warning signals, and weather advisories to help protect lives, property, and businesses.
Meanwhile, Dr. Juan Miguel Guotana, DOST-CAR Science and Technology (S&T) Fellow and geologist, discussed geologic hazards, particularly earthquakes and landslides. He explained that the Philippines is highly susceptible to these hazards because of its active fault systems and geologic setting, emphasizing the importance of understanding natural processes to support disaster preparedness and risk-informed decision-making.
To help participants assess hazards in their respective areas, Engr. Mark Jenesis Laory of DOST-CAR introduced HazardHunterPH, the government's official web- and mobile-based hazard assessment platform. Participants were guided through a hands-on activity using the application to identify site-specific risks such as active faults, earthquake hazards, volcanic hazards, and weather-related threats. The platform also generates hazard reports that can support land-use planning, infrastructure development, and business preparedness.
Engr. Hansi Dinumla, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST Baguio-Benguet, discussed Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) for MSMEs. She encouraged enterprises to strengthen their preparedness by implementing practical measures such as preparing evacuation plans, backing up business records, obtaining insurance, and developing a Business Continuity Plan.
Engr. Dinumla also underscored the importance of climate change adaptation, explaining that businesses must adjust their operations to cope with the long-term impacts of changing climate conditions to remain resilient and competitive.
Through the Pag-sci-atan Forum, DOST Baguio-Benguet continues to promote science communication and strengthen disaster preparedness by translating scientific knowledge into practical actions that help safeguard communities, livelihoods, and businesses from natural hazards.
