On September 16โ18, 2026, educators and school personnel came together for the Mental Health First Aid + Neurologic Red Flags Training conducted by the HSO-Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Unit at Venus Parkview Hotel, Baguio City.
But this training was more than just lectures and discussions. It was about learning to pause, notice, listen, respond, and connect. ๐ค
Participants explored how to provide initial support to individuals experiencing mental health concerns and emotional distress, while also learning to recognize neurologic red flags and distinguish possible neurologic emergencies from mental health presentations.
๐ก Recognize the warning signs.
๐ฌ Respond with compassion.
๐ฅ Refer to appropriate care.
๐ Support without judgment.
The three-day training was filled with meaningful discussions, practical learning, and shared experiences as participants strengthened their capacity to recognize, respond to, and appropriately refer individuals experiencing mental health concerns and possible neurologic emergencies.
The first day was productive and insightful, beginning with a discussion led by Dr. Rufina Abul, followed by the University of Baguio Nurses, who shared valuable knowledge and practical approaches to mental health and first aid. The second day focused on Therapeutic Communication, the Science of Addiction, and Attachment Theory, providing participants with deeper insights into effective communication, understanding addictive behaviors, and the importance of relationships and attachment in mental health. The third day brought the learning together through discussions on understanding neurologic red flags and differentiating neurologic emergencies from mental health presentations, helping participants become more attentive to warning signs that require timely and appropriate action.
Through continuous learning and collaboration, we take another step toward building safer, more compassionate, and more responsive schools and communities.
Because when we know what to look for, we become more prepared to act and sometimes, being ready to help can make all the difference. ๐
