The DA-Bureau of Soils and Water Management , through the DENR-UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Project, successfully established two Sustainable Land Management Exemplar Sites (SLMES) in Occidental Mindoro.

The activities were participated by representatives from the LGUs through the Municipal Agriculture Office, farmer association members of Neighborhood Shelter Assistance Association of Abra de Ilog, the Unlad Magsasaka Agriculture Cooperative (UMAC) of Paluan, IPs, project beneficiaries, and LGU-hired laborers from the community.

The biodiversity corridors are spaces that provide multiple benefits through the various ecosystem services they provide.

In the biodiversity corridors of Mindoro and Eastern Mindanao, Forest Guards work tirelessly in protecting and sustainably managing the ecosystems within that are home to an abundance of flora and fauna species that are significant to the local communities.

This World Ranger Day, let us recognize the dedicated efforts of our forest rangers; the unsung heroes on the ground who greatly contribute in sustaining a healthy ecosystem for all who benefit from it.

|| Cagayan de Oro, Philippinesโ€”BMB Leads Reorientation and Capacitation on the Protected Area Information System (PAIS) ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ

To continuously scale up biodiversity conservation, the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) spearheaded a comprehensive reorientation and capacitation workshop on July 27-31, 2026, focused on the use and management of the Protected Area Information System (PAIS).

The technical sessions provided regional personnel, database administrators, and Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) staff of Region 10 with hands-on training to effectively operate the system.

By digital optimization, the BMB aims to streamline PAIS to centralize data management, reporting, and biodiversity monitoring.

Meet the clever critters of the West Philippine Sea, the Coconut Octopus! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฅฅ

Coconut Octopus (๐˜ˆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด) are one of the species that calls the West Philippine Sea their home. In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the West Philippine Sea Arbitral Ruling, let us get to know one of the victors of this historic milestone to remind us of the marine wonders that are truly worth fighting for.

This species is a master tactician that makes use of unconventional materials such as coconuts and marine litter to protect themselves from predators. However, do not mistake this behavior as cowardice. Coconut Octopus are in the frontline in protecting the stability of our food web!

But the celebration is not yet over. Another critter wants to join in the fun! Can you guess which West Philippine Sea species is next? ๐Ÿ‘€Comment down below!

|| Guess the Magrove Species! โœจโ™ป

In line with our national celebration of International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove ecosystems, here's a fun question to see how much you know about Mangrove trees.

Q: Which Mangrove Species is known for its powder-puff flowers that bloom after sunset and fall by morning, relying on fruit bats instead of insects for pollination?

๐Ÿ’ฌDrop your answer in the comments, let's see who gets it right!
We'll upload the correct answer before the month ends

๐Ÿฆ… Theyโ€™re Indigenous communities.

A recent scientific study found that 46% of Indigenous Ancestral Domains in the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor contain highly suitable nesting habitat for the critically endangered Philippine Eagle.

๐Ÿ“– Read the full study here: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.05.19.654818v1.full
Source: bioRxiv

Thatโ€™s nearly 1 in every 2 ancestral domains serving as potential eagle strongholds.

For generations, Indigenous Peoples have protected these forestsโ€”not because they were declared protected areas, but because they are home.

Today, science is confirming what many have long known:
๐ŸŒณ Protect Indigenous lands. Protect the Philippine Eagle.

Thatโ€™s why the Philippine Eagle Foundationโ€™s engagement as a partner in the formulation of the Ancestral Domain Sustainable Development and Protection Plans (ADSDPPs) and Conservation and Community Protection Plans (CCPs) for 14 priority ancestral domains along the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridorโ€”under the DENRโ€“UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Projectโ€”is so strategic.

These plans strengthen Indigenous community-led governance and management of forests and natural resources, ensuring that conservation is built on Indigenous rights, knowledge, and leadership.

๐Ÿ’š When Indigenous communities thrive, forests thrive.
๐Ÿฆ… And when forests thrive, the Philippine Eagle has a fighting chance.

LIVE NOW || A Decade of Science. A Legacy of Stewardship.

For ten years, Filipino scientists and the DENR have worked hand in hand to deepen our understanding of the rich marine ecosystems of the West Philippine Sea, advancing science that strengthens conservation, informs policy, and safeguards our nation's natural heritage.

Join us as we commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award through the forum, "Science-to-Stewardship-to-Sovereignty: A Decade of Marine Scientific Research in the West Philippine Sea."

Witness how science is shaping environmental stewardship and reinforcing the Philippines' commitment to protecting our marine biodiversity for present and future generations.

26/07/2026

Beneath the waves, Filipino marine scientists have uncovered stories of life, change, and resilience โ€” findings that are shaping how we protect one of our most important seas.

On July 28, we finally open the vault.

What did a decade of science reveal?
What does it mean for our future?

Join us LIVE as we dive into the discoveries that are redefining stewardship and strengthening our understanding of the West Philippine Sea.
