Peatlands are known to provide water regulation ecosystem services and have been seen as natureโ€™s sponges as they absorb water during wet periods, which in turn mitigates floods, and slowly release it during the dry season. They also serve as storages for carbon which lessens the effects of climate change.

Within the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor lies the Caimpugan Peatland of Agusan del Sur. It is considered as one of the most carbon-dense terrestrial ecosystems in the Philippines and supports a high level of biodiversity which eventually provides livelihood opportunities to local communities within the peatland. In the Mindoro Biodiversity Corridor, the Kisloyan Peatland serves as a water basin that prevents soil erosion in the upland areas of the municipality of Victoria.

Letโ€™s take this time to realize that even peatlands make a huge impact in sustaining and protecting the shared landscapes and benefits to both people and biodiversity!

From Discovery to Resiliency! ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒ

As we celebrate the Month of the Ocean 2026, the Biodiversity Management Bureau, in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, lead this month's celebration, with the theme, โ€œSustaining Ocean Health, Sailing a Resilient Nation."

All over the country at the regional and field office levels, a diverse set of activities were implemented, including kick-off ceremonies, coastal and underwater clean-up drives, mangrove and beach forest planting, Dalaw Turo and community learning visits, youth camps and encounters, poster-making and video contests, forums, exhibits, fun runs, biodiversity camps, and lectures in schools and coastal communities.

In line with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, particularly Ocean Decade Challenge 6: Increase Community Resilience to Ocean Hazards, the celebration aims to strengthen ocean literacy, promote science-based and community-driven actions, and encourage multi-sectoral collaboration among government agencies, local government units, academic institutions, civil society organizations, private sector partners, and coastal communities toward building safer, adaptive, and environmentally sustainable coastal and marine ecosystems.

A reminder that every Filipino shares the responsibility of protecting coastal and marine environment. Happy Month of the Ocean!

Happy Month of the Ocean! ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒ

As part of the annual celebration for the Month of the Ocean 2026, the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau has successfully concluded its culminating activity, titled โ€œOcean Forum and Ocean Nexus Network Launch,โ€ at the Training Center, Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center, Elliptical Road, Diliman, Quezon City.

The sessions were led by our esteemed speakers: Aries Soledad from PAMALAKAYA-Cavite, Miguel Vargas from Dalumpinas Oeste Eco Rangers ( DOERs ), Grick Cordero from the BMB - Coastal and Marine Division, and Ms. Aiko Love Del Rosario from the DENR-Ocean Environments Task Force.

They discussed the status quo of our coastal communities and marine ecosystems facing various ocean hazards, highlighting the struggles our fisherfolk encounter as well as the importance of our mobilization and active participation in response to these issues.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to our partner organizations: One Pawikan Initiative, Mangrove Matters PH, Neymatophores, Las Piรฑas Paraรฑaque Wetland Park, Wetlands International Philippines, and all the youth participants who joined and exchanged conversation with us! ๐Ÿ’™

May we continue to uphold our shared responsibility to sustain and protect our oceans through collaborative action and meaningful advocacies.

|| Strengthening Capacity, Reinforcing Cave Conservation ๐Ÿฆ‡

To equip the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) personnel and relevant stakeholders for effective cave conservation and management, the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) conducted a Pilot Testing of the Training Module on Cave Management in Quezon City from May 25 to 28, 2026. ๐Ÿช–๐Ÿ“’

This was participated in by representatives from Regions III, IV-A, MIMAROPA, and the Negros Island Region. The training module will serve as a comprehensive guide for trainers in conducting capacity-building activities on basics of caving, cave assessment and management, as well as safe caving practices. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ

Before the full-scale implementation of the training module, the Gaia Exploration Club (GEC) also participated in identifying gaps, refining methodologies, and providing feedback from participants. This will further enhance the training module. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ ๐Ÿ“‘

๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ข๐—ž:

Daghang salamat DENR!
