What does humanitarian work look like beyond the classroom?
Through its partnership with the Faculty of Political Sciences at .oficial , IOM Romania helps bring real-world experience into academic learning.

On 27 and 28 October, students had the opportunity to engage in online guest sessions with two IOM professionals:

Alina-Ioana Maier, an IOM humanitarian professional with experience across the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans, discussed “From Humanitarian Response to Recovery and Development”, exploring practical decisions, challenges, and lessons learned in the field.

Andrew Lind, IOM Head of Office in Lebanon, brings over 20 years of experience in humanitarian operations, migration, and displacement across several regions.

These lectures are part of the Master's Programme in Development, International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, developed by SNSPA in partnership with IOM Romania, connecting academic learning with practical humanitarian experience.

As part of the InterACT – Active Participation and Integrated Support for Migrants in Romania (AM2A1D) project, participants came together for a culinary workshop celebrating traditional autumn recipes!

Working in teams, participants prepared two seasonal favourites: pumpkin pie and cheese pie. In a relaxed and welcoming environment, the activity encouraged participants to practice Romanian, exchange experiences and strengthen communication and collaboration.

This activity was hosted under the project: InterAct – Active Participation and Integrated Support for Migrants in Romania 2026-2027 (project code AM2A1D), funded through the National Programme 2021 – 2027 Asylum, Migration, and Integration, and co-funded by the General Immigration Inspectorate (GII), and the European Union (EU).

At the International Organization for Migration (IOM), we firmly believe that mental health and well-being is a continuous ongoing process.

As part of our ongoing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) activities, we recently hosted an interactive Self-Care Workshop.

During the session, we explored practical tools, shared strategies for emotional resilience, and discussed how to integrate mindful self-care into our demanding daily routines. Taking care of ourselves is the very foundation that allows us to show up fully for the vulnerable communities we serve every day.

This activity is part of the project: Transition from emergency assistance to social, sustainable and autonomous inclusion of Ukrainians refugees into Romanian society – IncludE UA PHASE 2, project code AM2A2B, funded through the National Program 2021 – 2027 Asylum, Migration, and Integration, and co-funded by the General Immigration Inspectorate (GII), and the European Union (EU)

IOM Romania participated in the National COMPASS Simulation Exercise on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, held on 12-16 October 2026 in Ochiuri, Dâmbovița County.

Organized under the auspices of the Romanian Government, with the OSCE coordinating the exercise and support from International Justice Mission (IJM), COMPASS brought together relevant national institutions and partners to strengthen coordination, operational preparedness and the national response to human trafficking.

IOM Romania worked alongside representatives of the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) and the Romanian Border Police, contributing to interinstitutional cooperation and the exchange of expertise throughout the exercise.

The exercise provided an important opportunity to reinforce cooperation with Romanian authorities and demonstrate the value of IOM’s operational experience and technical knowledge in supporting national counter-trafficking efforts. IOM Romania continues to support national efforts to strengthen responses to human trafficking and protect people affected by this crime.

430 victims of human trafficking were identified in Romania in the first half of 2026 – 32% more than during the same period in 2025. Identifying victims is a crucial first step, but an effective response also depends on cooperation between institutions, access to support and protection, and solution for each person`s individual circumstances.

On 20 October 2026, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Romania participated in the conference “Institutional Synergy – A Common Response to Human Trafficking” hosted by the National Agency Against Trafficking in Persons (ANITP) to mark the EU Anti-Trafficking Day.

The conference highlighted the importance of coordinated institutional action in preventing human trafficking, protecting victims, and ensuring access to appropriate support.

IOM Romania contributes to these efforts by supporting migrants who are victims of trafficking, including through assisted voluntary return and reintegration programmes. We firmly believe that combating human trafficking requires sustained cooperation that places the rights, safety, and dignity of survivors at its center.

IOM Romania is looking for Romanian Language Lector – Hourly Paid
Duty Station: Bucharest, Romania / Online
Contract Type: Hourly Service Contract

IOM Romania is seeking qualified instructors to deliver Romanian language learning activities for migrants, refugees and other beneficiaries participating in IOM inclusion programmes. Fluency in Romanian and English is required.
Courses may be delivered in person in Bucharest and/or online. Depending on programme needs, sessions may also take place during evenings and weekends.

Inclusion in the roster does not guarantee immediate engagement. Individuals may be contracted on an as-needed basis, depending on project requirements, beneficiary needs, availability and funding.

✅ Main Responsibilities
- Prepare and deliver Romanian language courses for participants with different levels of proficiency;
- Deliver in-person and online classes using practical and interactive teaching methods;
- Adapt teaching materials and activities to participants’ learning needs and levels;
- Assess participants’ language level and monitor their progress;
- Prepare lesson plans, exercises and other learning materials;
- Maintain attendance records and required course documentation;
- Support participants in developing practical Romanian language skills for everyday life and integration in Romania;
- Coordinate with IOM programme staff regarding attendance, progress and learning needs;
- Ensure an inclusive and respectful learning environment;
- Participate in relevant IOM meetings and programme activities, as required;

✅ Education
Bachelor’s degree in Romanian Language and Literature, Philology, Educational Sciences, Linguistics, Foreign Languages, Pedagogy or a related field, with at least two years of relevant professional experience; or
High school diploma with at least four years of relevant teaching experience (including pedagogical module)

IOM participated in the opening orientation session for international scholarship recipients entering the Romanian language preparatory year at Transilvania University of Brașov.

During the session, IOM highlighted its mission, available integration services, and joint initiatives organized alongside the university. Building on a three-year partnership, this collaboration supports international students as they undergo intensive language preparation and cultural orientation before beginning their degree programmes.

We sincerely thank our partners at Transilvania University for their continued collaboration and wish the new cohort every success in their academic journey!

IOM Romania brought together representatives from public institutions, employers, academia, and civil society to discuss findings from a survey on third-country nationals and ongoing labour migration reforms in Romania.

The exchange highlighted evidence-based approaches to migration governance, including labour migration policies, digitalisation, worker retention and integration measures.

The discussions underscored the value of evidence-based policymaking and multi-stakeholder dialogue to build more inclusive communities and support fair recruitment.

This activity was carried out with the support of the European Union's Technical Support Instrument (TSI) and in cooperation with DG REFORM.

IOM Romania brought together the Prefecture of Cluj County, the Cluj Immigration Office (IGI), and local and regional authorities to discuss migration governance and integration priorities in the context of evolving demographic trends.

The exchange focused on the forthcoming National Immigration Strategy 2026-2030, local integration challenges, and opportunities to strengthen inter-institutional cooperation and access to services for foreign residents.

The discussions highlighted the importance of coordinated, evidence-based approaches that support effective policy implementation and more inclusive communities.

This activity was carried out with the support of the European Union's Technical Support Instrument (TSI) and in cooperation with SG REFORM.
