On August 12, 1881, a devastating fire broke out at Prague’s National Theatre, one of the most important symbols of Czech culture. 🇨🇿🔥

The fire was seen as a national tragedy, but it also inspired an extraordinary response. People from across the country came together to support its reconstruction, turning a moment of loss into a powerful display of unity.
Today, the National Theatre stands not only as a cultural landmark, but also as a lasting symbol of Czech resilience, solidarity, and national pride.

Jára Cimrman is one of the most beloved cultural icons in the Czech Republic, even though he never actually existed. 🇨🇿😄

Created as a fictional character by Czech writers, Cimrman is portrayed as a brilliant inventor, scientist, explorer, playwright, and polymath whose supposed achievements shaped world history. Over the years, countless stories have credited him with remarkable inventions, discoveries, and encounters with famous historical figures, making him a beloved symbol of Czech humor, creativity, and self-irony.

Today, Jára Cimrman remains one of the most popular fictional characters in Czech culture.

Jaroslav Heyrovský was the first Czech scientist to receive a Nobel Prize. 🇨🇿🧪

Best known for inventing polarography, a groundbreaking method for analyzing chemical substances, Heyrovský was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1959. Miloš Forman (1932–2018), one of the most celebrated Czech film directors, drew inspiration from Scandinavian cinema. 🇨🇿🎬🇸🇪

Known for masterpieces such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Amadeus, Forman admired the psychological depth, authenticity, and humanism that made Swedish film internationally renowned.

Through his unforgettable storytelling and deeply human characters, he became one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century, leaving a lasting legacy in world cinema.

One of the world’s largest medieval manuscripts, the Codex Gigas, also known as the “Devil’s Bible”, was created in what is now the Czech Republic. 🇨🇿📖

Written in the early 13th century at the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice, the manuscript contains the complete Latin Bible, as well as texts on history, medicine, and exorcism. After the Thirty Years’ War in 1648, it was taken to Sweden as war b***y, where it remains today in the National Library of Sweden.

A remarkable piece of shared Czech and Swedish history.

On July 11, we remember the passing of Milan Kundera, one of the most influential writers of the Czech Republic. 🇨🇿📚

Known for blending philosophy, dark humor, and reflections on freedom under totalitarian regimes, Kundera became one of the most distinctive literary voices of the late 20th century. His works found a particularly strong readership in Sweden, where they were translated and widely read long before he regained prominence in his homeland after 1989.

Today, his literary legacy continues to connect readers across the Czech Republic, Sweden, and beyond.

Czech physician Jan Janský changed modern medicine with a discovery that still saves millions of lives today. In 1907, he classified the four main human blood groups, laying the foundation for safe blood transfusions around the world.

On Blood Donor Day, celebrated on June 14th, we remember not only his scientific contribution, but also the importance of every person who chooses to donate blood.

🇨🇿✨ Last Thursday, we were delighted to welcome alumni to the Czech Embassy in Stockholm for an evening full of reconnecting, networking, and celebrating our shared connection to Czechia.

The program featured lively conversations, new and renewed friendships, and a fun Kahoot quiz on Czechology that tested participants’ knowledge of Czech history, culture, and traditions.

And of course, no Czech gathering would be complete without a taste of Czech hospitality! Guests enjoyed traditional Czech specialties accompanied by Czech beer, creating the perfect atmosphere for sharing memories and experiences.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so enjoyable. We are proud to stay connected with our alumni community in Sweden and look forward to welcoming you again at future events.
