The Ministry today conducted an induction programme for the newly appointed Wages Councils, equipping members with the knowledge and understanding required to effectively carry out their important responsibilities.

The induction focused on the role, mandate and legal framework governing the Wages Councils, while also highlighting the importance of promoting fair labour practices, constructive social dialogue and decent working conditions across various sectors.

The Ministry congratulates the newly appointed Council members and wishes them every success as they begin this important assignment in advancing equitable and productive labour relations in the Kingdom.

Today, the Ministry through the Task Team of the National Tripartite Advisory Technical Council on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) held a regional stakeholder consultative meeting on the proposed Occupational Safety and Health Bill. The meeting brought together representatives from the construction, manufacturing, textile, engineering, rail transport, municipal, academic, MSME, employer, worker, and occupational safety and health sectors to gather valuable input on the proposed legislation.

Stakeholders welcomed the proposed reforms, recognising their importance in strengthening the protection of workers, promoting safer and healthier workplaces, and addressing emerging workplace risks. Discussions also highlighted the need for adequate institutional capacity, technical expertise, and resources to ensure the effective implementation of the new law.

This consultation marks the first of a series of regional engagements that will be conducted across the country

The Honourable Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Phila W. Buthelezi, MP, today officially launched the newly appointed Wages Councils for the Kingdom of Eswatini's eighteen regulated sectors, marking the beginning of their three-year term of office.

In his address, the Minister congratulated the newly appointed members and urged them to execute their mandate with integrity, impartiality and professionalism. He emphasised that the Wages Councils remain a vital pillar in promoting decent work, social justice, industrial harmony and inclusive economic growth through meaningful social dialogue between employers and employees.

The Minister highlighted the importance of ensuring that wage determination is guided by evidence, taking into account key economic factors such as inflation, productivity, enterprise sustainability, competitiveness and the cost of living. He further reminded Council members that the minimum wages they recommend should serve as a foundation, while encouraging employers with the capacity to provide better remuneration through collective bargaining.

Hon. Buthelezi reaffirmed Government's commitment to supporting the work of the Wages Councils through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security by providing technical assistance, administrative support and capacity-building initiatives. He called on all members to uphold the highest standards of ethics, confidentiality and fairness as they contribute towards improving labour standards and advancing the decent work agenda in Eswatini.
