𝐍𝐔𝐊𝐔'𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐅𝐀, 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐚 – 0𝟐 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 The Integrated Aged Care Project reached a significant milestone yesterday with the successful convening of a commencement meeting at the project's head office in Nuku'alofa, marking the formal start of preparations for the construction of the first aged care centre in Houma, Tongatapu.
The meeting brought together key project stakeholders, including Project Manager Manu Manuofetoa, Supervision Team Leader Malakai Vakasiuola of ITS Pacific Ltd, Manase Vaoahi from the Project Management Unit (PMU) at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Project Safeguard Officer Hikaione Loumoli, and representatives of 'Ofa Construction, the contractor appointed to undertake the construction works.
The purpose of the meeting was to formally initiate the construction phase and ensure that all parties shared a common understanding of their respective roles, responsibilities, and contractual obligations before the construction began.
Discussions focused on the construction contract agreement and covered a range of critical project implementation matters, including site procedures, project programme and timelines, quality assurance requirements, health and safety standards, environmental and social safeguards, and reporting and communication protocols.
The Houma Aged Care Centre will be the first facility developed under the Integrated Aged Care Project and is expected to play a key role in strengthening support services and care options for older people in Tonga.
The project team confirmed that preparations are now underway for the official groundbreaking ceremony. The date for the ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Integrated Aged Care Project’s Steering Committee successfully held its seventh meeting to review key milestones and drive the next phases of the activities for IAC project. The productive session focused heavily on implementation progress, specifically the preparations for the construction of the aged care centers, the caregivers' allowance, home modification programs, and ongoing caregivers training. In addition to these updates, the committee successfully approved several major activities, including the official endorsement of 50 new caregiver beneficiaries, vital budget reallocations to optimize project resources, and preparation for the next cohorts of caregiver training facilitated by TTI, which is scheduled to commence on 13 July. We extend our sincere gratitude to all committee members for their continuous guidance and dedication to strengthening the care network for our elders and support systems for our caregivers.

The ADB-funded Integrated Aged Care Project (IACP) Sub-committee convened today to review and endorse key project activities to be submitted to the Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting scheduled for Thursday. We are grateful that the project continues to progress and remain committed to advancing aged-care services for our elders.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Sub-committee members from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Maa Fafine, Tonga Retirement Benefits Fund, and the Project Management Unit (PMU) for their thoughtful contributions. We also warmly welcome our newly appointed Communications Specialist, Kite Tu'akalau, who travelled from New Zealand to participate in this preparatory meeting.
We look forward to presenting these endorsed activities at the forthcoming PSC meeting and continued the collaborative efforts to strengthen aged-care systems in Tonga.
