🌊 USCGC Hollyhock Strengthens U.S.-Tonga Partnership! 🇺🇸🇹🇴

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock (WLB 214) recently completed a successful visit to Nuku'alofa and Vava'u as part of Operation Blue Pacific!

During their patrol, Commander Jessica McCollum and her crew:
✅ Hosted over 170 students and community members for public tours aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock.
✅ Conducted bilateral maritime law enforcement operations with Tongan Royal Navy officers Lt. Cmdr. Toetuu Vaka and Sblt. Lehopoame Palaki in Tonga's exclusive economic zone.
✅ Gave back to the community through a beach cleanup near American Wharf.
✅ Engaged with local leaders, including Pen*simani Vainikolo, acting governor of Vava'u

This visit reinforces the strong partnership between the United States and Tonga, promoting security and stability across Oceania.

Great news to share! 🎉
East Palo Alto and Kolofo'ou have officially signed their Sister City MOU, making this the first Sister City partnership between Tonga and any American city.
The signing was a historic milestone, with Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Sinaitakala Tuku'aho, the Patron of this partnership, signing the MOU as the first signatory, followed by East Palo Alto City Manager Melvin Gaines, East Palo Alto Mayor Webster Lincoln, and Kolofo'ou District Officer 'Alotaisi Takau.

This partnership has deep roots - it began in 2022 when East Palo Alto responded to the Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption and tsunami by sending $1.6 million and five containers of aid across the Pacific. What started as disaster relief has blossomed into a lasting bond between our communities.
Both delegations worshipped together, shared meals, and visited world-class institutions side by side - a beautiful example of people-to-people diplomacy in action.

USCGC Hollyhock Public Visit a Great Success!

What a great day! The turnout was excellent as we welcomed students and community members aboard the USCGC Hollyhock. Students from Tonga National University Maritime School, Tonga High School, Tonga College 'Atele, and other schools experienced firsthand the operations and activities of the U.S. Coast Guard. The crew and sailors provided hands-on demonstrations and shared their expertise with our visitors. Thank you to everyone who joined us and to the USCGC Hollyhock crew for their hospitality and dedication to engaging with the Tongan community. 🇺🇸🇹🇴

HEALTH ALERT: Dengue Fever Outbreak in Tonga

On May 8, 2026, the Tongan Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of dengue fever across all of Tonga. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne virus prevalent in tropical regions. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, muscle and joint pain, and minor bleeding. Serious cases can be fatal and require hospitalization.

Actions to Take:
• Remain indoors or in screened/air-conditioned areas during peak mosquito activity
• If outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a hat
• Consult the CDC for health advisories: 800-232-4636 or 404-639-3534
• Make contingency plans to leave
• Keep travel documents up to date and accessible

🚢 U.S. Coast Guard Cutter HOLLYHOCK Coming to Tonga!

We are excited to announce that the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter HOLLYHOCK will be visiting Tonga!

This is a unique opportunity for the Tongan community to come aboard and experience a U.S. Coast Guard vessel firsthand! Tour the ship, meet the crew, and learn about maritime operations in the Pacific.

Tours are open to families, students, and all members of the public. Come see the equipment, ask questions, and discover what life is like aboard a Coast Guard cutter!

During their visit, HOLLYHOCK crew members will also be partnering with the Tonga Royal Navy for joint training exercises and volunteering in our local community.
