Yesterday, Pacific Australia Skills proudly handed over the Whale Watching & Swimming Guide Level 3 training resources to Tupou Tertiary Institute, Pouono Campus in Vava’u.

By investing in local skills and knowledge, this exciting new course creates employment opportunities, promotes a Tongan-led tourism sector, and reinforces the importance of safe, responsible tourism. Most importantly, it helps protect Tonga’s precious marine environment for future generations 🐋

Under Tala Kei Kapa, our humanitarian program, we know preparedness isn’t just for when disaster strikes - it starts long before 🌊🌪️

Last week, RedR Australia partnered with the Tonga National Disaster Risk Management Office - NDRMO to deliver the Essential Humanitarian Practice course here in Tonga. Bringing the training to Tonga supported government and civil society responders to strengthen practical skills, engage with coordination structures, and take part in a simulation exercises.

Tonga is no stranger to disasters - this training helps ensure responders are better prepared to act when it matters most.

👏Thank you to RedR Australia and NDRMO for supporting this important work.

A significant milestone for strengthening public sector excellence in Tonga!

The Australian High Commission, together with our Tongan partners through the Kafa Taha Governance Partnership has just launched a fantastic training program on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for Tonga's public sector.

With more than 80 participants from the Tonga Office of the Auditor General, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Public Enterprises, and other key agencies it is encouraging to see such strong engagement and dedication to building technical capability within the public sector.

This is what real partnership looks like - working side by side (Kafa Taha!) to strengthen systems, improve governance, and support more effective and accountable public financial management for Tonga’s future.

Great to see everyone sharpening their skills under the expert leadership of trainer Dr Peni Fukofuka.

Keep soaring, Tonga!

The Australian High Commission proudly flies the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags alongside the Australian national flag.

We do so to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first peoples of Australia, and their enduring spiritual, cultural and community connection to land and sea.

The theme of this year’s National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), ‘ALL IN’ reminds us that the journey toward justice and reconciliation continues and that all of us in Australia have a role to play.

With over 65,000 years of continuous culture, First Nations Australians share deep and lasting connections with the people of the Blue Pacific 🌊

It’s great to see the Governor-General of Australia, Ms Sam Mostyn AC and Mr Simeon Beckett SC reconnect with His Majesty King Tupou VI and Prime Minister Lord Fakafānua during their visit to Samoa.

Building on the momentum from Their Majesties’ visit to Australia last September, and the signing of the Statement of Intent to elevate Australia–Tonga relations, the meeting underscored our growing partnership.

From security and education to economic cooperation and strong people-to-people links, Australia and Tonga’s 150+ year friendship continues to go from strength to strength.

As we strengthen our 200-year bond between Tonga and Australia, we’re proud to welcome a new member to the High Commission! Meet Tegan Baker

Tegan is in the First Secretary (Governance) role and is driven by a commitment to support Tonga’s governance and economic resilience, working across a broad portfolio spanning the Kafa Taha economic investment, infrastructure, social protection, volunteers, and labour mobility.

Grounded in anga fakatonga, Tegan approaches her work with deep respect for Tongan traditions - listening carefully and building relationships through feveitokai’aki (sharing and cooperating), falala’anga (trust), and fefaka’apa’apa’aki (mutual respect), ensuring her work reflects Tonga’s development priorities.

She is particularly passionate about the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme - a program that highlights the mutual benefits of the partnership, strengthening connections through family, community, and diaspora networks across Tonga and Australia.

Through her work, Tegan hopes to contribute to meaningful opportunities and lasting outcomes for communities in both countries.

Mālō e ngāue, Tegan.

Tongans & Australians 🤝 bringing the ocean bling✨

New research supported by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), through the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Ministry of Fisheries - Tonga, highlights growing demand from cruise visitors in Vava’u for locally made pearl jewelry and shell craft.🌊💙 🦪

Love seeing research translate into real opportunities for Tonga’s artisans - Would you pick up mabé pearls as a cruise souvenir?

As we come to the close of Family Month, the Australian High Commission paused to celebrate and reflect on those who mean the most to us - our families, who love and support us every day.
