DOCCS honors the memory of the 43 colleagues who have died in the line of duty since 1861. Today, on September 27, 1906, Matteawan State Hospital’s Head Attendant Nellie Wicks had been employed at the hospital for the criminally insane for one year when she was stabbed by an incarcerated individual. She had planned to leave the hospital in four days to enroll in nursing school.

Congratulations to Recruit Class 2026-04 who graduated on September 11, 2026. Assistant Commissioner Dawn DiCairano gave the keynote address. The 76 Correction Officer graduates will now head to on-the-job-training at their direct placement facilities, thanks to the Department’s current Recruitment Initiative.

National Beauty and Barber Week focuses on building confidence and resilience. To support the State’s goal of reducing recidivism, it is vital to teach these skills so incarcerated individuals can succeed back in the community.

DOCCS honors the memory of the 43 colleagues who have died in the line of duty since 1861. In 1971, the Attica Prison Uprising took place and resulted in the deaths of 43 people, including 11 correction employees, most by New York state police gunfire during the retaking of the facility. These 11 employees were held hostage during the riots that led to their ultimate sacrifice.
