Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of attending the New York Association of Towns - NYAOT Legislative Conference and participating in a panel discussion on 'Building Effective Intergovernmental Relationships.'

NYCOM Executive Director Barbara Van Epps joined NYAOT Executive Director Chris Koetzle and New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Executive Director Stephen Acquario to discuss the importance of strong partnerships across all levels of government and how we can work together to support New York’s local communities.

Our exhibitors are an important part of the Fall School experience, connecting with our members and showcasing the products, resources and services that help municipalities do their jobs better. We’re grateful for their continued support of NYCOM and the time they invest in connecting with our members.

In honor of Women’s Equality Day, NYCOM’s Women’s Advisory Committee gathered to hear the stories of three beloved village clerks — Martina McClinton, Liz Dreaper and Cathy Sweeney — whose careers took them from military service to municipal government.

Their military experiences instilled qualities that became the foundation of their careers, including leadership, composure, teamwork and a commitment to others. Those lessons carried over into their work in Village Hall, shaping how they approach their roles and their residents.

They also shared advice for the next generation of women in local government, reminding us that the skills and lessons gained throughout our careers can help us become stronger leaders.

Today, we’re celebrating their stories and the countless women making a difference in local government every day. 💜
