This page primarily highlights the work of two state agencies: the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS, online at criminaljustice.ny.gov) and the Office of Victim Services (OVS, online at ovs.ny.gov). It also features information from the state Commission of Correction (SCOC, online at scoc.ny.gov). Also shared on this page are missing child, missing college student, or missing vulnerable adult alerts, which are activated by the New York State Missing Persons Clearinghouse, which is part of DCJS.

For Forensic Science Week, we’re showing how familial searching helped investigators revisit evidence from a 1995 sexual assault in Brooklyn. DCJS reviewed and approved the search request, and prosecutors and detectives followed the lead to a Bronx man who has now been charged.

The Honorable Sean Coffey kicked off the 2026 DCJS Public Safety Symposium with the inspiring story of an injustice remedied 80 years later. While serving as general counsel of the Navy, Coffey led an intensive record review that eventually led to the exoneration of 256 African American sailors wrongfully convicted in the 1944 Port Chicago courts-martial.

We were proud to recognize three outstanding officers for extraordinary acts of courage and bravery during the 2026 DCJS Public Safety Symposium opening ceremony.

🏅 Rochester Police Officer Nicole Amatore received the 2026 Police Officer of the Year Award for confronting and stopping an armed man who had shot three fellow officers.

🏅 New York State Trooper Thomas Stiehler of Troop G received a 2026 Lifesaving Award for entering a burning Albany building and carrying a mobility-impaired woman to safety.

🏅 Suffolk County Police Sergeant Robert Griffith received a 2026 Lifesaving Award for providing emergency aid to a critically wounded man and stopping an armed attacker.
