Mayor Tuerk’s Statement on Last Night’s Gun Violence

June 7, 2026-- Along with the rest of the Allentown community, Mayor Tuerk last night became aware of the tragic incident last night in which a young member of this community was a victim of gun violence. This is an ongoing investigation, we don’t have many details that are available for the public at present, but our hearts are with the family in this difficult time.

Among the great tragedies of our time is that so many guns find their way into the hands of so many young people so easily. This was a person not even 18 years old…. A boy... a child… who had his whole life ahead of him. This happened to another young man two weeks ago in our city.

We have to do better. We have to stop the flow of guns into the hands of young people.
Along with City Council and the broader Allentown community, Mayor Tuerk extends his deepest condolences to the family of this young person, and to the families of every victim of gun violence…

Al igual que el resto de la comunidad de Allentown, el alcalde Tuerk se enteró anoche del trágico incidente en el que un joven de esta comunidad fue víctima de la violencia armada. No hay muchos detalles disponibles al publico debido a la investigación pendiente, pero nuestros corazones están con la familia en estos momentos difíciles.

Una de las grandes tragedias de nuestro tiempo es que tantas armas llegan tan fácilmente a las manos de tantos jóvenes en nuestra comunidad. Este es una persona que ni siquiera había cumplido los 18 años... un joven... un niño... que tenía toda la vida por delante. Esto mismo le ocurrió a otro joven en nuestra ciudad hace dos semanas.

Debemos hacerlo mejor. Tenemos que detener el flujo de armas hacia los jóvenes.

Junto con el Concejo Municipal y toda la comunidad de Allentown, el alcalde Tuerk expresa su más sincero sentido pésame a la familia de este joven y a las familias de todas las víctimas de la violencia armada...

🚨 TRAFFIC SAFETY REMINDER – ALLENTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT 🚨

As enforcement begins under Pennsylvania’s Paul Miller’s Law, the Allentown Police Department is reminding all drivers:

📵 Put the phone down while driving.

It is now illegal to hold or use a hand-held mobile device while operating a vehicle — this includes scrolling social media, texting, watching videos, or using apps, even when stopped at a red light or in traffic.

Enforcement & Penalty:
• This is a primary offense — officers may stop you solely for holding a device
• First-time violations carry a $50 base fine plus court costs and fees

How to stay compliant:
• Use Bluetooth or hands-free calling systems
• Set up GPS before driving
• Use dashboard mounts and voice commands
• Pull over safely if you need to use your phone
