Preparing for release comes with practical questions: Where will I live? How do I find work? Can I get into an apprenticeship? Where can I continue treatment?

On August 13, Wildwood Correctional Center (WCC) brought the answers directly to participants. The WCC Resource Fair welcomed 34 representatives from 20 organizations, connecting individuals with resources for housing, employment, education, apprenticeships, treatment, healthcare, reentry services and more.

Events like this are also a reflection of the important work happening every day through DOC’s Reentry, Education and Vocational Services staff. Their work helps bridge the gap between incarceration and successful reentry by connecting individuals with the tools, opportunities and community partners they need to move forward.

The Alaska Department of Corrections is proud to be part of the ongoing collaboration to strengthen Alaska’s response to Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP).

On August 13 and 14, Anvil Mountain Correctional Center Superintendent Joe Jennetten represented DOC and AMCC at the MMIP Community Response Plan Workshop in Solomon, about 40 minutes outside of Nome. And yes, Solomon is technically on the road system, at least by Nome standards. Nome has three roads that extend roughly 80 miles into the surrounding region, and getting to the workshop meant a drive down one of them in an AMCC vehicle, with plenty of Alaska-style bumps and dirt road along the way.

The workshop brought together tribal leaders, community members, service providers, law enforcement, advocates, and partner organizations with a shared goal: building a coordinated, culturally grounded response for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People.

Over two days, participants identified community strengths and available resources, discussed gaps and barriers in current response efforts, strengthened partnerships and communication, and developed actionable steps focused on prevention, response, and support services. The group also created a draft Memorandum of Understanding that will be refined and shared with participating organizations for review and approval.

Addressing MMIP requires strong relationships, open communication, and a commitment to working together. DOC is grateful for the opportunity to have a seat at the table and to work alongside communities and partners toward a response that is collaborative, effective, and grounded in the needs of Alaska’s Indigenous communities.

From August 10–14, 11 individuals at Fairbanks Correctional Center (FCC), including four women and seven men, took part in a week of hands-on welding instruction provided by Alaska Ironworkers, designed to build practical skills and provide opportunities for industry-recognized achievement. 🔥

During the course, participants learned the fundamentals of Shielded Metal Arc Welding and oxy-acetylene cutting. Instruction began with classroom training covering welding safety, terminology, tools, equipment and foundational knowledge before moving into hands-on practice and evaluation.

By the end of the week, all 11 participants successfully completed the course and received a Certificate of Achievement. 🎓

Programs like this provide individuals in our custody with an opportunity to learn practical, job-related skills while working toward credentials that can support employment and a successful return to their communities.

Congratulations to all 11 participants on completing the program and investing in their future! And a big thank you to the staff at FCC for facilitating the program!

Our thoughts are with our DOC coworkers, their families, and everyone in the Juneau area as the community prepares for potential flooding along the Mendenhall River.

The City and Borough of Juneau has issued an Imminent Threat Alert as Su***de Basin is full and expected to release within the next 1–6 days. Those in potentially affected areas are urged to make final preparations, finalize evacuation plans, and have a go bag ready.

To our DOC family in Juneau: all of DOC is thinking of you and stands ready to help in any way we can. Please stay safe, look out for one another, and continue to follow guidance from local emergency officials.

There's a lot happening at Palmer Correctional Center, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Reentry, Education and Vocational Services team. Every day, they work with community partners to bring meaningful training opportunities inside the institution, helping students gain valuable skills, earn industry-recognized certifications, and prepare for successful employment after release.

Current training opportunities include welding, electrical, carpentry, math for trades, forklift and aerial lift operation, OSHA safety training, asbestos abatement, food service and food worker certifications, CPR and First Aid, DMV written driver's license testing, and welding simulator training.

These programs are about more than learning a trade. They're about building confidence, creating opportunity, and giving people the tools they need to succeed. We are grateful to our staff and community partners who make this work possible and continue investing in safer communities through education and vocational training.

🌾🚜 Giving back, one bale at a time! 💚

Point Mackenzie Correctional Farm is always finding ways to support the community. Most recently, the farm donated 10 large round hay bales to the Alaska State Fair! 🎡🐄

This is another great example of PMCF's commitment to serving Alaska while providing meaningful, hands-on agricultural work experience for the inmates in our care. From the field to the fair, it's work that makes a difference! 🌱🤝
