Victims for Justice is looking for passionate Alaskans to join our Board of Directors! If you care about supporting survivors of violent crime and want to help shape programs, events, and advocacy efforts across the state, we’d love to connect. The board meets every other month (with short committee check-ins in between), and hybrid options make participation easy. We’re especially hoping to add members with rural Alaska experience, accounting or legal backgrounds, or familiarity with healthcare systems — but most importantly, we’re looking for people who care about our mission and want to be involved. If that sounds like you, reach out and let’s talk.

Today we’re highlighting one of the many ways our advocates support crime victims: helping them write Victim Impact Statements.

A Victim Impact Statement is a powerful opportunity for a victim to share, in their own words, how a crime has affected their life. In Alaska, victims have specific rights — rights they fought hard for — and this is one of the few moments where their voice is centered in the courtroom.

Our advocates walk alongside victims as they navigate this vulnerable process, helping them reflect on the physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual impacts of the crime. Whether a victim chooses to read their statement in court, submit it privately, or have an advocate read it for them, they deserve to be heard with dignity and compassion.

Today, we honor the strength of crime victims and the advocates who help ensure their rights are recognized.
