As Chair of the Ways and Means’ new Child Care Subcommittee, my focus after the 2026 session was to spend the interim assessing how to make childcare better for our kids from infant to 12th grade.  
 
We are hearing from leaders in family day cares and childcare centers, childcare and youth after-school advocates, business leaders and elected officials across the state in preparation of thoughtful legislation for the 2027 session.  
 
The work that will be introduced in 2027 will be rooted in the belief that our investments in childcare are investments in the future of our children, our families and our economy.

The state of our schools isn’t where it needs to be, and yesterday’s MCPS Board of Education summit laid that out honestly.

I appreciated that transparency. It matched what I saw on back-to-school visits with Board members in August. Educators giving everything, in a system under real strain.

Staying up to date on these changes is how we get the policy right in Annapolis and make sure our students get the world class education they deserve.

Tonight at sundown, our Jewish neighbors across our State begin Rosh Hashanah and welcome the year 5787. It’s a time for apples dipped in honey, the sound of the shofar, and honest reflection on the year behind us and the one ahead.
That practice of taking stock and starting fresh is something all of us can learn from. To every family gathering around the table this weekend: I’m wishing you a sweet and healthy new year.

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation lost 2,977 people in New York, at the Pentagon, and in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Marylanders were among them, and so were many of the first responders who ran toward danger that morning.

Today we remember every life taken, honor the firefighters, police officers, and service members who answered the call, and hold close the families who have carried this loss for a quarter century.

We will never forget.

Happy Ethiopian New Year!

Last Sunday, I joined families, artists, and small business owners at the Ethiopian Day Festival at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Thank you to the Ethiopian Community Center in Maryland for bringing all of us together.

Our Ethiopian neighbors in District 14 and across Maryland will be welcoming the year 2019 on the Ethiopian calendar tomorrow. Enkutatash is a time for family, coffee ceremonies, and fresh starts.

Ethiopian Marylanders help make our community what it is: small business owners, parents, neighbors, and friends. From my family to yours, may love be the cornerstone of every relationship you build.

It was an honor to come of age politically with Karen Montgomery in office. She was a steadfast progressive, a champion for women, and a role model for elected officials to serve with integrity. It was an honor to give her flowers to her and join her in the creation of the Brookeville Bypass. She will be missed dearly.
