Talking about bad things that could happen, like a disaster or emergency, isn’t always easy. We may think we’re protecting the people we love by avoiding these conversations, but they are important to start taking steps to get ready and stay safe.

Starting a conversation today can help you and your family to take more actions to prepare. By taking simple steps, you can build your preparedness at your own pace:

🟢Set aside a time when everyone is calm and relaxed.

🟢It may help to hold the discussions over a set time period, so decisions aren’t rushed, and people feel more comfortable talking about the topic.

🟢Talk about steps you’ve taken to prepare and encourage others to ask questions about preparedness actions that might work for them.

🟩WHAT: With severe weather events becoming more frequent and more extreme, it is more important than ever that New Yorkers are prepared for disasters. The NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program teaches residents to have the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. This training course will provide an introduction to responding to a natural or man-made disaster. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on emergency supplies.

In 1 week, this great training is going to kick off; don't miss out!

This October, the Broome County Community Emergency Response Team will be hosting their CERT Basic Training Course. A community outreach program intended to provide fundamental Disaster Preparedness skills to area residents at no cost to them. The class will prepare those who attend to help save and sustain lives following a disaster while they wait for help to arrive. The skills taught also apply to everyday emergencies.

It is a 21-hour course, delivered one evening per week over a 6-week period. Topics include:
• Disaster Preparedness
• Disaster Medical Operations
• Disaster Psychology
• Fire and Utility Safety
• Light Search and Rescue
• Terrorism
• Team Organization

All instructors are qualified first responders from area Fire, Emergency Medical, and Law Enforcement Agencies.

WHEN: Classes - Every Thursday from October 1 through November 5, 2026
Disaster Simulation - Saturday, November 7, 2026

Broome County Office for Emergency Services Emergency Management attended the 2026 New York Disaster Preparedness Commission Conference last week.
It was a great networking opportunity and even one of our team members spoke during one of the sessions that took place.

Our Emergency Management Division has conducted visits to local agricultural operations at a cow farm and the Whitney Point Dam.
We take the time to do these tours to understand how they operate during emergency situations, what our role is, and how we can help.
