We love Northern Plains landscape histories, and what it continues to tell us today.

Over the past few decades, Chief Looking's Village has been an important site for research and historical preservation. In the '70s, the City of Bismarck removed roads from the historical site and nominated it for recognition on the National Register of Historic Places, laying the foundations for the heritage site that exists today. Chief Looking's Village has become one of the most visited Northern Plains National Heritage Area sites, and has previously been used for the reconstruction of earth lodges and excavations.

Chief Looking's Village is part of the Northern Plains National Heritage Area, which preserves the living history and ancestral land of the Three Affiliated Tribes.

Happy Birthday, America!

Happy Birthday, America!

Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸

For 250 years, our nation's story has been written by extraordinary people, remarkable places, and the events that shaped who we are.

Across the country, National Heritage Areas help bring those stories to life. Through preservation, education, community partnerships, public art, recreation, storytelling, and heritage tourism, we connect people with the places and experiences that define America's past and inspire its future.

As we celebrate this milestone, we're reminded that history isn't just found in textbooks. It's found in our neighborhoods, landscapes, main streets, waterways, traditions, and the communities that continue to preserve and share them.

Here's to the next chapter of the American story, and to everyone working to ensure it is remembered, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.

Happy Independence Day from the Alliance of National Heritage Areas! 🇺🇸
