In April, SCT Levins traveled to Florida to become certified as a USAR Medical Specialist taught by Disaster Medical Solutions. For the Cedar Rapids division, Levins is now our fifth ‘Med Spec’.
Medical Specialist are specifically trained to perform Advanced Life Support functions on a disaster scene, specifically structural collapse, confined space, high angle, and any other place where victims need ALS intervention.
Med Specs work close with our team doctor and local hospitals so that when deployed, they are able to travel across state lines with advanced drugs that are not normally part of our medical protocol. They are trained in advanced techniques such as field amputations should the need arise.
Their primary function, however, is overseeing the well being and treatment of team members, even the four-legged ones! They are taught basic K9 intervention and care.
(Some photos are from previous trainings, including using a cow femur to simulate/practice a field amputation)

We are so grateful to have continued support from Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management The Cedar Rapids division was able to upgrade our Comms primary mover, replace our forklift, purchase some additional Logistics support equipment and even add a second semi/trailer to our fleet!
The new semi trailer has a soft cover that can be moved forward and back. This will make unloading our Western Shelter tents incredibly easier, as well as our tertiary cache of equipment. Our off-road Moffett forklift will be riding on the back of the new trailer.
Thank you citizens of Iowa and IHSEM for supporting our team!

This week our IA-TF1 Swift Water Rescue technicians once again traveled up to the Manchester White Water Park to work on their skills.
Obviously flash flooding is dominating the news right now. Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by these sudden, destructive acts of nature. We also ask that everyone remember all the Search & Rescue teams deployed, working in horrendous conditions to find everyone that may be lost!
We are always ready, prepared, and willing to deploy in order to protect not just the citizens of Iowa, but anyone who may be in need!
Thank you Manchester White Water Park!
