On Sunday July 5, 2026 at approximately 1:38 PM, members of the Charlestown Police Department, the Charlestown Rescue Service and the Charlestown Fire Department were dispatched to School House Pond beach located on Narragansett Indian Tribal property for a possible drowning. Upon arrival, first responders were directed to an area about 100 yards off shore where two adult males had overturned a fiberglass canoe while fishing. First responders were advised that one male successfully swam back to shore, however the other male, Jordan S. Monroe (25) of Narragansett, Rhode Island had gone under the water while trying to swim ashore and remained unaccounted for. Charlestown Police officers, assisted by US Fish and Wildlife Service and RI DEM Environmental Police officers, conducted a hasty water search and located Jordan Monroe a considerable distance offshore. First responders immediately started life-saving measures. Ambulance transported Mr. Monroe to Westerly Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigation indicates that neither occupant was wearing a life jacket, nor were any life jackets present in the boat during the incident. The beach is a swim at your own risk freshwater facility located on Narragansett Indian Tribal lands. The members of the Charlestown Police Department thank our mutual aid partners for their quick and valiant response. The Charlestown Police Department, RI DEM, and the state medical examiner's office are jointly investigating this drowning.

Today, members of the Charlestown Fire District assembled at Watchaug Pond to train on Water Rescue equipment and operations.

The CFD is one of 3 Fire/EMS agencies in Charlestown (along with Charlestown Ambulance & Dunns Corners Fire) with a trailered boat that can be deployed to Water Rescues in the local ponds or rivers.

This past Sunday, our members had yet another engaging and valuable experience on the Union Fire District training grounds as they practiced fire suppression & victim rescue operations.

Today, Charlestown Fire District members took part in two community events:

1. Several members gave a discussion on the history of the Cross Mills Fire Department as part of the Charlestown Historical Bike Ride.
2. Several members attended the Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service open house with with a CFD Engine. Thanks to CARS for the invite!

Later tonight, members will attend the annual Charlestown Fire District Banquet.
