Crisis Assistance Ministry provides emergency rent and utility assistance, clothing, household goods, furniture, beds, and appliances to struggling families and individuals. Applications for FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE are received Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Clothing and household goods are available to FREE STORE shoppers by appointment Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Furniture, beds, and appliances are available at our FURNITURE & APPLIANCE STORE by Partner Agency referral only. OPEN TO DONORS of clothing and small household goods: Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. FURNITURE DONATIONS should be made Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m.

In Charlotte, a two-bedroom apartment can cost far more than a family can reasonably afford on that income. HUDโ€™s 2025 fair-market rent for a two-bedroom home in the Charlotte metro area was $1,824 per month, including estimated utility costs. That would consume nearly two-thirds of a familyโ€™s monthly income before food, child care, transportation, health care, or any other essential expense.

What helps people move forward? Having the stability to take the next step.

Milly joined this yearโ€™s CLT Airport resource fair, where more than 900 airport employees had the opportunity to connect with services and support from approximately 20 nonprofits and organizations.

Economic mobility and stability go hand in hand. When people can find help with immediate needs, they have more room to plan for whatโ€™s next.

By day, Kim was a team lead. She was trusted to facilitate meetings, train managers, and serve customers. After work, she was sleeping in her car, a hotel, or on a friendโ€™s couch. Her coworkers did not know because she consistently showed up, performed her role, and kept going.

Kim's story reminds us to replace assumptions with dignity, compassion, and meaningful support.

There is a stigma we need to challenge: people experiencing homelessness may be employed, skilled, dependable, and doing everything society tells them will lead to stability, but sometimes it is not enough.

We cannot ask employees to โ€œbring their whole selves to workโ€ and ignore providing the support that allows that. It means helping create workplaces and communities where wages, benefits, flexibility, respectful leadership, and partnerships with local housing-stability organizations make it possible for workers to keep a safe place to call home.

Kimโ€™s story is a call to see people more fully and to choose compassion over assumptions.

Etelvina is a steady, positive presence in both our Free Store and production area.

She has donated an incredible 360 hours to our mission. That is the equivalent of 48 full workdays spent helping Mecklenburg County neighbors access the essentials they need with dignity.

But Etelvinaโ€™s impact is about more than the hours. Her warmth, compassion, and joyful presence have made her part of the Crisis Assistance Ministry family.

As we recognize National Clothing Insecurity Awareness, we are reminded that clothing is not a luxury. It is a basic need connected to dignity, opportunity and stability. National Clothing Insecurity Awareness is observed annually to help make this often-overlooked hardship more visible.

At Crisis Assistance Ministryโ€™s Free Store, Mecklenburg County neighbors can access clothing and household goods at no cost. In the past fiscal year, community donations helped us provide millions of essential items to people experiencing financial crisis.

For families on tight budgets, receiving these essentials free of charge can mean saving more than $100 for rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, childcare or another urgent expense.

Instead of a traditional fundraising event, NonEvent takes a different approach. This year we made low-budget movie parodies because we believe everyone in Charlotte can make a real difference, no black-tie required.
