Homeless Empowerment Program Breaking the cycle of homelessness for individuals and families, including Veterans.

The HEP Empowerment Garden is always growing new crops and experimenting with different growing techniques. This season, the team tried the Three Sisters method of companion planting by growing corn, beans, and squash together to support healthy growth naturally. The first batch of corn is ready to harvest, and it’s a beautiful variety of purple corn. The beans are climbing the corn stalks now, and we should start seeing those come in soon, followed by Seminole pumpkins! Be sure to follow along as we continue sharing the garden’s progress. 🌽

At the Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP) our purpose is to break the cycle of homelessness. Since 1986, our mission has been to provide homeless and low-income individuals and families, including veterans, with housing, food, clothing and support services necessary to obtain self-sufficiency and improved quality of life. We offer housing and programs specifically designed for single men and women, families with children and U.S. veterans.

HEP is grateful to have received several Spark Good Grants from several of our local Walmart stores! These grants support The HEP Thrift Store, which in turn benefits HEP's programs and helps us continue providing critical programs and services to individuals, families, and Veterans in our community. Thank you to our local Walmart stores for investing in the work happening at HEP and helping us make a lasting impact. 🧡

We're excited to announce HEP's NextGen Society, a young professionals network formed to bring fresh perspectives to HEP while creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders to engage in service, philanthropy, and community involvement! Members will serve as ambassadors for HEP, helping raise awareness about our organization and supporting initiatives that create lasting change. We’re proud to share that HEP Board Member Kevin Barfield will serve as Chair of the HEP NextGen Society as we welcome the next generation of changemakers to HEP’s incredible community of supporters!

NextGen is hosting a networking group for young professionals on June 10 at 6 p.m. at Mastry's on St. Pete Beach! We'd love to see you there!

Meet Ann, one of HEP’s dedicated Thrift Store volunteers and this year’s recipient of the “Price Tag Wizard” award at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast! Ann brings so much joy and energy to the Thrift Store. You can always count on plenty of laughs and smiles when Ann is around, and we’re so grateful for the time, talent, and positivity she brings to the HEP Thrift Store each week.

Another incredible Women Who Care Luncheon! This inspiring group of women continues to make a lasting impact on HEP’s Youth and Family Services. In 2025 alone, HEP served 95 families, including 228 children and an incredible 83% of families exiting HEP’s Emergency Shelter moved into permanent housing in the community. Thank you to our Women Who Care members for helping create brighter futures for the families we serve.

We’re incredibly grateful to the GFWC North Pinellas Woman's Club for awarding HEP a grant to purchase prescription lenses and frames for our residents! At HEP’s Dental & Wellness Clinic, residents can receive comprehensive eye exams at no cost from a licensed volunteer optometrist. This type of community support allows us to continue providing essential wellness resources that make a lasting impact. 🧡
