Don’t let roadway safety get spooked this Halloween! 🎃👻

October 17 is Move Over Day; a reminder to protect those working and helping on the roadside. See a stopped emergency, service, or Freeway Safety Patrol vehicle?

• Move over when possible.
• Slow down if you can’t safely change lanes.
• Stay alert and give roadside responders plenty of room.

On Halloween, keep an extra eye out for our little ghosts and goblins!
Drivers: Slow down and watch carefully for trick-or-treaters, especially near crosswalks, driveways, and residential streets.

Everyone: If you’re celebrating, plan a sober ride home. Buzzed driving is impaired driving. The ODOT Freeway Safety Patrol, sponsored by GEICO, operators remind everyone to keep roadway safety top of mind, and when the unexpected happens, we’re there to help.

Move over. Slow down. Stay sober. Watch for trick-or-treaters. Because the only scary thing on the road should be the Halloween costumes!

It may be October, but ODOT is ready for snow and ice season!

Across Ohio, our crews are inspecting snow-fighting equipment and making sure materials, trucks, and drivers are ready for whatever winter brings. Nearly 3,000 drivers, working 12-16-hour shifts during snow events, help keep Ohio’s roads safe.

Our 250 mechanics are hard at work completing 150-point inspections on nearly 1,700 trucks. Doing this now ensures repairs are handled before the first flakes fall.

This dedicated team maintains more than 43,000 lane miles of state and U.S. routes outside municipalities, plus all interstates except the Ohio Turnpike.

We’re also well stocked with more than 600,000 tons of salt on hand, with additional deliveries scheduled throughout the season.

One important reminder: 58 snowplows were struck last winter. When plows are hit, it takes critical equipment off the road and delays snow-clearing efforts. Please give our crews room to work! We are trying to help you, so let us!

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming a popular way to get around in Ohio! Before you hit the road, make sure you know the safety basics and check the local laws in your area.

1. Operate at a safe speed and give space to pass, especially on trails
2. Get on an e-bike/e-scooter with the motor off and brakes engaged
3. Increase space and stopping distance around other vehicles
4. Be cautious downhill and on tight turns as e-bikes/e-scooters have added weight that can increase speed
5. Follow all rules of the road and BE PREDICTABLE

Drivers, make sure you read the road and always pause, look, and listen. There's space for all of us!

October puts the spotlight on two important roadway safety reminders:

Oct. 7: Walk & Roll to School Day
Slow down, stay alert, use crosswalks, and watch for pedestrians and cyclists. Drivers, be especially mindful around schools and bus stops.

Oct. 18–24: National Teen Driver Safety Week
New drivers: buckle up, put the phone away, follow the speed limit, eliminate distractions, and never drive impaired. Parents, keep the conversation, and the practice, going.

And remember, the ODOT Freeway Safety Patrol, sponsored by GEICO, is there to help when the unexpected happens on the roadway. From assisting motorists to responding to incidents, they help keep everyone moving safely.
