First 5 Contra Costa

First 5 Contra Costa Working in partnership to change systems & supports to better meet the needs of children & families.

For more than two decades, First 5 Contra Costa has worked to support every child in reaching their full potential by focusing on their most critical years of development—prenatal to age 5. We focus on prevention, center our work around equity, and play many roles to reach our vision: funder, convener, and advocate. Working in partnership with others, First 5 Contra Costa aims to change systems of

services and supports to better meet the needs of young children and their families through our core strategies.

On Saturday, we joined the Northern California Family Child Care Alliance for a community gathering focused on child care advocacy, leadership, and equity in early education.

The most powerful part of the day was hearing directly from bilingual family child care educators, who shared their lived experiences within our early childhood system. Their personal stories highlight what it takes to support children, families, and the workforce every day—and why their voices must be central in shaping policy and practice.

We want to extend our appreciation and congratulations to everyone that made this event a success. This work was made possible through First 5 Contra Costa’s Building Blocks Mini-Grants, funded by Sunlight Giving, which are designed to elevate provider voices, expand engagement in advocacy, and build public awareness to support systems change efforts.

Shared solutions begin with listening.

First 5 Contra Costa’s consultant, Pamm Shaw, recently gathered feedback from the Contra Costa County Local Planning Council on emerging themes from a countywide landscape analysis focused on early care and education (ECE) workforce supports.

Thank you to our Local Planning Council members for sharing their valuable insights, experiences, and ideas as this important work continues to evolve. Your collaboration is helping shape stronger supports for the ECE workforce across Contra Costa County.

Stay tuned for the final report coming this summer!
