Today, July 18, 2026, is the anniversary of the death of Lieutenant Ivan H. Hayes. This year will mark 66 years since Lieutenant Hayes made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Lieutenant Ivan Hayes, 51, was a lifelong resident of Strafford, New Hampshire, born on September 30, 1907. He was a graduate of Austin Cate Academy, the Institute of Applied Sciences in 1928, and Harvard University Medical Legal School. He continued to study over the years and just over a year before he passed away he earned his law degree from LaSalle Extension University.

Lieutenant Hayes was a member of the New Hampshire State Police since its inception on July 1, 1937. He transferred from the Attorney General's Office where he worked under State Investigator Ralph Caswell, the future Superintendent of the State Police. Lieutenant Hayes was also one of the fingerprint experts for the New Hampshire State Police.

In addition to his service to the State Police, Lieutenant Hayes was a member of several local and national law enforcement associations. He also served as a member of various community organizations in and around Strafford.

On July 18, 1959, Lieutenant Hayes responded to reports of a wildly driven car in his area. He decided to respond because the Trooper on duty was tied up elsewhere. When he was found, Lieutenant Hayes had suffered a heart attack. He was a valuable asset to the New Hampshire State Police and is missed greatly by his family, community, and fellow Troopers.

Colonel Mark B. Hall regrets to announce the unexpected death of Sgt. Brian J. Ross, a 19-year veteran of the New Hampshire State Police.

Sgt. Ross began his career as a patrol Trooper in Troop A and went on to fulfill a variety of entrusted roles, including assignments with the Major Crime Unit, the Special Events Response Team and the Motorcycle Unit. In recent years, he served as the Commander of the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit.

Our hearts are broken by this loss. Sgt. Ross served the people of New Hampshire with courage and integrity, and all of us will miss him greatly. We ask everyone to join us in offering his family, including his wife and three children, the support and privacy they deserve at this time.

Massachusetts State Police Announce the Death of Trooper in Off-Duty Motorcycle Crash

With heavy hearts, the Massachusetts State Police announce the unexpected death of Trooper Jacob Mick who died from injuries sustained in an off-duty motorcycle crash in Grafton.

A member of the 88th Recruit Training Troop assigned to the Holden Barracks, the life of this 31-year-old Northboro native has been cut short by this enormous tragedy.

Speaking of the late Trooper, the Superintendent of the State Police, Colonel Geoffrey Noble said, “Together, we mourn Trooper Jacob Mick, and extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, their infant daughter, his family, and all who loved him. He was a proud Trooper and public servant who never hesitated to answer the call. We remember and honor Trooper Mick’s years of service, and all he gave to the Commonwealth as well as to the Department.”

Trooper Mick graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 2023.

The facts and the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

It is with great sadness that DPS announces the death of Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Sergio Romero.

Trooper Romero was attempting to conduct a traffic stop along US-287 near Childress, around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of him, causing his patrol unit to collide with the vehicle. Trooper Romero died on scene.

Trooper Romero answered the call to serve each day with honor and remained steadfast in his commitment to protecting and serving Texans. The DPS family will never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made in service of this state.

Trooper Raymond Elliott

Today we remember and honor Trooper Raymond Elliott.

After serving in the United States Navy during WWII, Trooper Raymond Elliott settled in Groveton, NH. Trooper Elliott joined the New Hampshire State Police on July 15, 1946.

On June 1, 1947 Trooper Elliott was sideswiped by another driver while he traveled along Route 16 between Berlin and Gorham. Trooper Elliott's cruiser went off the roadway and struck a utility pole. He died as a result of the injuries that he sustained in the crash.

Trooper Elliott had served with the State Police for 11 months and was 26 years old at the time of his death. Trooper Elliott was survived by his parents and his son Wayne.
