Officer William L. Williams, #4994 - End of Watch: August 2, 1988

On August 1, 1988, around 10 p.m., Officers Williams and T. Caldwell were dispatched to a disturbance call at 3707 Mt. Ranier Street. There were two previous calls at that location where Joseph Charles Howard Jr. claimed people were trying to break into his car and his apartment. Other Officers had noted Howard appeared drunk and there were no signs of criminal offense. Howard was hiding in the bushes near his car and armed with a .22 automatic. While Williams and Caldwell talked to Howard’s wife in the apartment, a 17-year-old girl was shot in the shoulder in a nearby breezeway. The officers brought the girl upstairs and waited for the ambulance. Caldwell stayed with her while Williams went downstairs to investigate the matter. Soon after Williams reached the parking lot, Howard emerged from the bushes and shot Williams in the head. Caldwell called for assistance.

Officers R. Ermatinger, E. Rivera, T. Robinson, M.D. Colborn, and G. Salinas arrived. Howard shot at Salinas grazing his head. The officers returned fired and killed Howard. Officer Williams died the next day.

Officer Williams was a 20-year U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran and had served with the Dallas Police Department for five years. He was also a deacon at Calvary Temple, and the oldest rookie to join the Department. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

Officer Charles Maltese was killed when he was struck by a drunk driver southbound on North Stemmons Freeway south of Motor Street.

He was working the scene of a previous fatal vehicle crash on Stemmons Freeway when a drunk driver swerved across the flare line and struck him, throwing him 147 feet.

The driver, whose BAC was .25, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to ten years.

Officer Maltese had served with the Dallas Police Department for two years. He was survived by his fiancee and parents.

Reserve Officer Joe Jones succumbed to injuries sustained the following day when his cruiser was struck by another police car as he responded to an emergency assistance call made by other officers.

Officer Jones was responding to an officer assistance call in the 700 block of South Beacon Street. While en route to the scene his police vehicle collided with another police vehicle near the intersection of Live Oak Street and North Fitzhugh Avenue. Both police vehicles involved had their emergency equipment activated when the collision occurred.

Officer Jones received massive injuries in the accident and died a short time later at Baylor Hospital.

Reserve Officer Jones was a military veteran and had served with the Dallas Police Department for four years. He was survived by his wife, daughter, and son.

Officer Theodore Tedford succumbed to a gunshot wounds after being sent to a fight call while on mounted patrol. When he arrived on the scene the suspect opened fire, striking him in the side. After falling off of his horse the suspect shot him again before fleeing. Office Tedford was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds two days later.

Four days later the suspect shot and killed Red River County Sheriff Charles Stephens who was on a posse trying to arrest the killer. The man was chased for several miles before being killed by the posse.

Officer Tedford had served with the agency for seven years. He was survived by his wife and three sons.

Officer Tedford's brother, Alex, was killed in the line of duty 15 years later while serving with the Dallas Police Department.

Lieutenant Robert Cormier and Reserve Officer James Taylor were killed in a helicopter accident near the intersection of South Hall Street and Canton Street.

The officers were looking for landing spots for the upcoming Republican Convention when the helicopter struck a communications tower 450 feet in the air. Both officers were killed instantly.

Lieutenant Cormier was a U.S Air Force veteran and had served with the Dallas Police Department for almost 25 years. He was survived by his wife and five children.

Senior Corporal Jamie Givens was struck and killed by a drunk driver while conducting a funeral es**rt for another Dallas police officer at approximately 5:30 am.

Motor officers were es**rting the procession along I-20 to a location in East Texas. Corporal Givens stopped to block traffic entering the highway at Bonnie View Road. He was stationary on his motorcycle, with its emergency lights activated, when he was struck by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

He was transported to Baylor Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver who struck him was arrested and charged with DUI. He was sentenced to ten years for intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer as part of a plea deal.

Corporal Givens had served with the Dallas Police Department for 32 years. Survivors include his sons, mother, and sister.

Officer Thomas Harris succumbed to injuries sustained nine days earlier while chasing a stolen vehicle on Julius Schepps Freeway near Simpson Stuart Road.

He had attempted to stop the vehicle, which immediately fled. As he tried to pass a truck, his patrol car flipped over, and he suffered massive internal injuries. The suspect was sentenced to life as a habitual offender but was not charged with Officer Harris' death.

Officer Harris was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam war and had served with the Dallas Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

Senior Corporal Lorne Ahrens, Police Officer Michael Krol, Sergeant Michael Smith, and Police Officer Patrick Zamarripa of the Dallas Police Department, and Police Officer Brent Thompson of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Department, were shot and killed by an active shooter during a protest in downtown Dallas.

As the protesters walked down Main Street, between South Lamar Street and South Market Street, a sniper opened fire on police officers who were providing security for the event. The man shot a total of 12 officers, killing five and wounding seven.

The subject was cornered in an adjacent college building and barricaded himself inside for several hours while he spoke to negotiators, during which time he stated he specifically targeted white police officers. He was killed when the Dallas Police Department's Bomb Squad moved an explosive device to the man's location using a robot and detonated it.

Corporal Ahrens had served with the Dallas Police Department for 14 years and had previously served with the Los Angeles County, California, Sheriff's Office for 11 years. He is survived by his wife and two children. His wife also serves with the Dallas Police Department.
