Happy Separation Day!

Happy Birthday, Delaware!
Hear ye, hear ye! It’s our birthday/Independence Day, declared June 15, 1776, in the New Castle Court House. Six reps from each county unanimously rejected being ruled by the King, the Penns, and Pennsylvania. A copy of their resolution hangs in the room where they voted, but the minutes and attendance list are lost to time. We do know Assembly Clerk James Booth and three others were there: Assembly Speaker Caesar Rodney of Kent County and, from New Castle County, Thomas McKean and George Read, both later serving as “president” or governor. The delegates didn’t just dub us as Delaware, declaring it as “The Delaware State.”

After two days on the road, more than 80 miles traveled, and countless stories shared along the way, Caesar Rodney’s historic journey will soon reach its conclusion.

Today, June 13, the 250Ride.org reenactment will arrive in Philadelphia, honoring the ride that helped change the course of American history nearly 250 years ago.

As the journey enters its final chapter, we reflect on the courage, determination, and sacrifice that helped shape a nation. What began in Dover will conclude in Philadelphia, just as it did in 1776, honoring the legacy of those whose actions helped secure American independence.

This morning, the 250Ride.org began at Old Christ Church in Dover and will stop at Middletown this evening. Tomorrow, you can catch Caesar Rodney at the Separation Day parade in New Castle before he journeys to Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
