During Pride Month, we reflect on the work we've done to make Delaware a safer place for everyone who calls it home — and we celebrate the simple truth that love is love.

Sen. Trey Paradee and Sen. Kyra Hoffner joined community leaders for a ceremonial beam signing of the new Eleanor Cain Center at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill. The new center honors the legacy of Eleanor Cain, aunt of Sen. Paradee, and represents major investments in quality care for Delaware’s aging population for generations to come.

In a unanimous decision, the Delaware Supreme Court upheld Sen. Stephanie Hansen's Senate Bills 159 and 199, two bills that will allow the construction of an electrical substation in association with a proposed offshore wind project that will bring new energy generation onto our electric grid.

“Our state is facing serious energy supply and reliability challenges, and our neighbors are being crushed by rising energy costs," said Sen. Hansen. "We cannot afford to deny energy projects that bring massive amounts of new, clean, renewable energy into our grid, providing us with the energy supply and reliability we need. Local decisions that stand in the way of the greater good for all Delawareans are appropriately overridden. Having now been through Delaware Chancery Court, Delaware Superior Court and the Delaware Supreme Court, this should now be a settled issue.”

Sen. Marie Pinkney and U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester have teamed up to create safer spaces for pregnant patients here in Delaware and across the country. For too long, Black women and other women of color have faced discrimination and negligence in health care. That’s why Sen. Pinkney and Speaker Rep. Melissa Minor-Brown introduced Senate Bill 301, which requires hospitals to provide a discharge plan when they send a patient in labor home before giving birth. This bill mirrors the WELLS Act which was introduced by Sen. Blunt Rochester and US Rep Robin Kelly.

SB 301 unanimously passed the Senate yesterday. Meanwhile in Congress, the WELLS Act has been introduced and awaits consideration.

With unanimous support, the Senate voted to approve Senate Bill 302, which will allow the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) to implement a modernized funding formula for the 2027-2028 school year. Thanks to the leadership of Public Education Funding Commission Chair Sen. Laura Sturgeon, lawmakers and education stakeholders have reached consensus on our next steps on school funding.

The Senate also passed Senate Bill 303, codifying the PEFC as a permanent body. The bills now head to the House Education Committee for consideration.

One of the main drivers of rising health care costs is that the majority of Delawareans do not have access to a primary care provider. Instead of seeing a doctor for regular checkups, they are forced to turn to hospital waiting rooms to seek treatment for even the most routine conditions — or that they won’t seek care at all.

Primary care plays a central role in ensuring Delawareans’ access to health care and chronic disease management, improving health and wellness and preventing costly emergency care. But many primary care practices are consolidating, closing, or moving to expensive concierge services, which leads to increased consumer costs.

Today, the Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 1, co-prime sponsored by Sen. Bryan Townsend and Sen. Ray Seigfried. This legislation continues on previous work of the General Assembly to invest in our state's primary care with the goal of making healthcare more accessible and cost-effective.

City Delegation Remembers Mayor Mike Purzycki:

“Fewer people have had a more profound and enduring impact on the City of Wilmington than Mike Purzycki.

Long before his tenure as mayor, Mike had a vision for our city that few could see. Under his leadership at the Riverfront Development Corporation, the long-forgotten marshes along the Christina River were transformed into a vibrant hotspot that has since attracted businesses, young professionals, and athletic teams who now call our riverfront “home.”

Everyone who worked with Mike understood that he wouldn’t shy away from the toughest challenges facing the city, but that he would work to build consensus and partner with anyone who was interested in solving problems.

Mayor Purzycki’s legacy is undeniable and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with Bette and his family during this time.”

President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola has taken part in the Legislative Bike to Dover for over three decades, and Wednesday marked the last ride of his legislative career. Sen. Sokola has led the charge by advocating for safer biking facilities along Delaware roadways, increasing the number of biking trails in our state, and for all Delawareans to take up biking both as a hobby and for health.

May is always a busy time in Legislative Hall. In the weeks leading up to June 30, our committee meetings begin to run longer and our agendas get bigger. Still, we make time to meet with hundreds of advocacy organizations, student groups, and citizens who take the time to visit our state capitol. Here are some snapshots from this week:
