The Covered Bridge Days begin tomorrow, Friday September 25th, at 11am and goes through Sunday evening. Starting today, September 24th, at 3p road closures will begin downtown in preparation for Covered Bridge Days. Road closures will go through Sunday evening. Please use alternate routes and use extreme caution as there will be an influx of traffic and pedestrians.

The Carter County Criterium bike race will be this Sunday and will result in street closures in our downtown area.

Effected roadways will begin to be closed at 7:00 AM. There will be different races beginning at 8 AM. Races are scheduled to end, and roadways are anticipated to be open by 6 PM.

The racecourse will be on the following streets downtown: Hattie Avenue, North and South Sycamore Street, East E Street, and North and South Riverside.

Streets will be closed a block away from the race route to form an outer perimeter for safety of the racers and spectators.

Elizabethton Police officers at the closed intersections will assist race participants and spectators, as well as effected residents and those attending church services at First Christian Church on Hattie Avenue and Elizabethton Alliance Church on East Elk Avenue to parking as needed.

Join us in welcoming officer Trey Rutledge to the Elizabethton Police Department.

Rutledge, from Washington County and now residing in Carter County, is starting with the department as an entry level officer. He will complete four months of field training and a 12-week program through the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.

Throughout the hiring process, he participated in two interviews, underwent an extensive background review, and passed medical, physical, and psychological evaluations, as well as a drug screening.

The Elizabethton Police Department is attempting to identify an individual involved in a shoplifting incident that occurred at the Food City in Elizabethton on July 22nd, 2026. Please view the attached photos of one offender and contact us with any viable information.
