Join us in welcoming officer Trey Rutledge to the Elizabethton Police Department.

Rutledge, from Washington County and now residing in Carter County, is starting with the department as an entry level officer. He will complete four months of field training and a 12-week program through the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.

Throughout the hiring process, he participated in two interviews, underwent an extensive background review, and passed medical, physical, and psychological evaluations, as well as a drug screening.

Elizabethton Electric is experiencing outages scattered across its service territory due to the ongoing storm. Reports began around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 28.

Crews will work to restore power to all affected areas as soon as possible.

🚧 Traffic Alert 🚧

A new project is starting in Downtown Elizabethton on Tuesday, July 28, at 7 a.m. and is expected to be complete by Friday, July 31, weather permitting. Crews are continuing roadway resurfacing through the downtown area, this time concentrated on the section of E. Elk Avenue between Elk Avenue Bridge and Highway 19E.

While work is ongoing, temporary lane closures, detours, flagging operations, and other changes to normal traffic patterns are expected. One lane will remain open at all times, and lane closures will likely shift as the work zone moves along the roadway. Temporary detours may also be required when the roadway is fully blocked.

Homes and businesses along this portion of E. Elk Avenue will remain as accessible as possible. On-street parking will be prohibited during active construction hours, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., but city parking lots will remain open. Nearby lots include the Courthouse Lot, Covered Bridge Lot, Edward's Island Park Lot, and Riverside Drive Lot.

Please use caution through the area this week as workers will be present. The city appreciates your patience and cooperation as we work to enhance roadway safety, improve travel conditions, and support ongoing recovery efforts related to damage from Tropical Storm Helene.

Beneath our roads is a whole other city constantly in motion, a network of pipes, valves, and lines that keeps our community connected.

The city of Elizabethton has over 250 miles of water lines and 100 miles of sewer lines tying together homes, businesses, and public facilities. Keeping that network running takes diligence, hard work, and plenty of behind-the-scenes effort from our Water Resources crews.

Earlier this week, they replaced a faulty valve in Downtown Elizabethton. The job required shutting off water in multiple locations to prevent flooding while the old valve was removed and the new one installed. The crew worked late into the evening to complete the repair while minimizing the impact on downtown businesses.

As pipes and valves age, rust and corrosion can restrict water flow and reduce efficiency. If left unaddressed, it can eventually lead to a burst or larger failure. While installing a water line for a new fire hydrant downtown, the department discovered the leaking valve and was able to address the problem before it became a bigger one.

It’s a reminder that the⚡City of Power⚡we know above ground wouldn’t be possible without the connected systems beneath it or the dedicated crews who keep them running.

Tweetsie Trail Jams returns for its fifth year to Citizens Bank Stadium in Elizabethton on Friday, August 7, and Saturday, August 8.

Friday night's concert with 107.9 The Bridge - WBEJ is ✨FREE✨ for all to enjoy music from three Southern Gospel groups: Jeff & Sheri Easter, The Browders, and Adam Crabb. Show starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets are ⭐Available NOW⭐ for Saturday's concert with 88.3fm WCQR featuring Contemporary Christian artists Matthew West, Jon Reddick, and Megan Woods. General admission will have first come access to the football field lawn, and assigned ticketed seating includes sections in the stadium bleachers and designated sections surrounding the stage. Show starts at 6:30 p.m.; doors open at 5:30 p.m.

🚧 Traffic Alert 🚧

Starting around 8 a.m. this morning, July 20, a crew began work on W. Elk Avenue (U.S. 321) in the area between Tri-Cities Gun Depot and Cash Express, located at 1825 W. Elk Ave.

They'll be onsite from 8 a.m. to around 5 p.m. through Wednesday, July 22, when work is planned to be complete. The roadway will fully reopen after 5 p.m. each day.

Westbound towards Johnson City, the rightmost lane will be closed while the crew improves truck access to a gas transfer station. This work is unaffiliated with the city and is contracted through ALH Construction.

Please use caution in the area starting around Parkway Boulevard as vehicles will need to merge into the left lane, and workers will be present.

The Position: The Maintenance Worker maintains all parks and playground equipment, as well as, mowing of all grass areas.

Responsibilities:
Removes trash from parks and facilities
Mows all grass areas
Assist with pool maintenance
Performs maintenance on all playground and park equipment mowers, trailers and departmental small machinery
Other duties as assigned

Skills:
Ability to obtain knowledge of all recreational facilities within the City
Knowledge of and ability to use maintenance equipment
Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures

Requirements: High school diploma or GED equivalent, valid Driver License, and at least 18 years of age; college or technical school certificate and one year related experience or training required

The Position: This Utility Worker performs assigned jobs including, but not limited to, repair of streets, mowing and w**d eating, pick up of residential garbage, and other general maintenance duties.

Responsibilities:
Operating mowing equipment
Performing leaf collection duties and storm drain maintenance
Driving small utility vehicles such as pick-up trucks and small dump trucks
Design and install proper signage in accordance with MUTCD- Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Other duties as assigned

Skills:
Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities
Ability to operate electric and gas-powered tools and equipment
Effective communication skills
Knowledge of traffic control problems and procedures
Knowledge of standard traffic sign wordings, colors, shapes, and methods of installation
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in sign and marking work

Requirements: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three months related experience and/or training.
