This week VCFD crews are sharpening their vehicle extrication skills with hands-on training.

Crews are working through vehicle stabilization, glass management, gaining access, and multiple extrication techniques using our rescue tools. Training like this gives our firefighters the opportunity to practice the skills, communication, and teamwork needed when seconds matter on the roadway.

It's great to see one of our neighboring departments being honored with one of the statewide awards from the recent Indiana Fire Chiefs Association conference — Chief Gentry and his team's record speaks for itself, and we're glad to have top-notch resources like this available to serve residents in the Evansville/Vanderburgh area. GTFD Fire Chief Buckman had the chance to speak on a statewide panel and reflect on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, sharing how that day shaped and forever changed their careers and the fire service as a whole during the annual Indiana Fire & EMS Leadership Conference hosted by the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association.

Update to our MVA w/ extrication earlier this morning. At least one lane of traffic is now open on SB I-69.

Huge thanks to Ascension St. Vincent EMS and American Medical Response of Evansville for assisting with mutual aid patient transport and district coverage during this incident.

On Monday, September 14, at approximately 8:57 a.m., Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a vehicle crash with injuries on southbound I-69 near Booneville New Harmony Road.

I-69 SB is CLOSED south of the BNH overpass. VCFD and VCSO crews remain onscene of a serious multi-vehicle accident with extrication. All patients have been transported.

As we finish up our final tasks before shift change, we remember a dark morning 25 years ago today.

102 minutes.
2,977 civilians.
343 FDNY firefighters.
23 NYPD officers.
37 Port Authority police officers.
8 EMS personnel.

9/11 is a reminder of courage.
A reminder of ordinary people doing extraordinary things when everything around them was falling apart.

Strangers carrying strangers.
Passengers fighting back, knowing what it might cost them.
First responders and untrained civilians risking everything so others could have a chance.

Remember the courage.
Remember the sacrifice.
Remember the unity.

Harvest season is getting underway across our area!

Over the next several weeks, you’ll start seeing more combines, tractors, grain trucks, and other farm equipment traveling on our roadways.

Please use extra caution when approaching slow-moving equipment. Slow down, give farmers plenty of room, avoid passing unless you have a clear and safe opportunity, and remember that large equipment may need extra space to make turns.

Our local farmers are working long hours to bring in the harvest. A little patience can help make sure everyone gets home safely.

Slow down. Stay alert. Share the road.

A different view of this morning’s training with Marshall Disposal. Thanks again for providing the equipment, knowledge, and opportunity to train on something we don’t get to work with every day.

This morning, VCFD personnel took part in a unique training opportunity with Marshall Disposal focused on trash truck operations, hazards, and emergency response considerations.

The morning began with a classroom presentation before moving outside for hands-on training with an actual trash truck. Crews worked through access challenges, stabilization, rope systems, aerial operations, and rescue considerations that could come into play during a real incident involving this type of equipment.

A big thank you to Marshall Disposal for taking the time to share their knowledge, provide equipment, and help make this training possible. Opportunities like this give our firefighters valuable experience with situations we may not see every day, but still need to be prepared to handle when the call comes in.
