Official Page for The Carnegie Historical Museum in Fairfield Iowa. We are the 1st Carnegie Library built west of the Mississippi river. to 8:30 p.m.

The Museum has always been the 3rd floor of the building but now includes exhibits in the basement. Our unique collection features one of the Midwest’s foremost collections of Native American pottery, Civil War artifacts, Roman Antiquities, and an exhibit dedicated to Fairfield and Jefferson County memorabilia. We are open Tuesday through Friday from 11 - 4:00 p.m. And We are also open every 1st Friday for Artwalk from 6 p.m. Stop in and enjoy our rich history.

We want to thank the Drish family for this copy of the family farm from around 1950s. We estimate the address to be about 2920 136th St. in Jefferson County. We’re trying to identify all farms and homes that have ever been in the county. Do you have old photographs of Homestead and houses all over the county and in the towns of all Jefferson County? We have so many artifacts coming in on a daily basis. We are going to shut down next week to try to get a good control over what we have. And during the winter months, we will have a few weeks here and there we will shut down also, but we will keep all of you posted when they will be, just trying to keep up on documentation. Thank you

We want to thank Nancy Swaim for donating this picture of J.C. Penny to the museum. Mrs. Swain worked for years at JCPenney and this picture always hung in the store here in Fairfield. Many of us remember it well.

We received some old Fairfield yearbooks. This was from the class of 1954. It’s very funny how youth express themselves, even in the 50s. 😂

We just got these pictures and we think it’s 1972. It’s at the old underpass on Burlington Avenue. Is this little gas station the old DX station that was on the corner of ninth and Burlington? Do you have any pictures like this in your collection, we’re looking for all this stuff for the history of Jefferson County.

804 W. Taylor Ave. Fairfield, we were just given this photo of this home when first built. Do you have copies of your home in Jefferson County you could donate to us for our history? We are documenting all farms, and homes in ALL the county.

We wanna think, Margaret Berg, for bringing these pictures in for our permanent collection. She took these pictures when Logan school was coming down in 1972. Do you have pictures like this of our community or for the county? We’d love to have them for our permanent collection.
