After 442 days serving meals-to-go we are opening our Schneider Hall dining room to the public.

New Community Shelter Opens Dining Room after 442 Days Closed

Green Bay, WI — June 1, 2021 — After 442 days of closing the Schneider Hall dining room to the public in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, today the Community Meal Program will re-open for dinner at 5PM.

On March 16, 2020 the New Community Shelter closed the doors to program participants, but continued to serve meals-to-go to individuals and families in need. It also ceased all volunteer groups from coming in and helping with in the meal program to keep everyone safe. This put a tremendous burden on staff, as well as the shelter’s budget.

“The first few months we closed the dining room, community meal participants asked daily if we would be back again tomorrow,” said Terri Refsguard, New Community Shelter CEO. “We assured everyone that we would not close our meal program - we couldn’t because there are too many people who rely on the program to feed themselves and their families. Despite the challenges we faced as an organization, we soon found that even more people needed our help, so keeping our program going was crucial. So today is a very big day for the shelter, meal participants and our loyal volunteer groups.”
The challenges included:
• Not having volunteer groups in to providing, preparing and serving meals
• Increased costs for food and the new cost of preparing to serve meals t-go
• Cost of staffing because staff now had to plan, prepare, purchase and serve meals every day
• The increase in meals being served to familiar and new Community Meal participants.
• Increased number of people needing food boxes (boxes containing meat and other items for home cooked meals)

- More –

In 2020 the shelter gave out 1,119 meal boxes served 162,039 meals, a 67% increase from 2019. There was also a 79% increase in the number of meals served to children and a 65% DECEASE in the number of volunteer hours tallied.

“We have 65% of our volunteer groups back in the shelter preparing and serving meals,” Refsguard said. “We don’t have a volunteer group in today, but it will still be nice to welcome people back into our facility.”

The New Community Shelter will be taking temperatures of individuals coming in for meal as a precautionary measure. The shelter will also offer meals-to-go to individuals not comfortable having a meal inside.
