🎒 Chikaming Township Police Department Community Backpack & School Supply Drive 📚

As another school year approaches, we have an opportunity to come together as a community and help local students start the year with confidence. A donation box has been placed in the lobby of the Chikaming Township Police Department during normal business hours.

Every backpack filled is one less worry for a family and one more student ready to succeed. Thank you for always supporting our community and helping make a difference for our local children.

UPDATE: The exit is open and all crews have cleared the scene.

Please avoid the area of US HWY 12 WB and I94.

The 4b exit ramp on I94 Westbound is closed due to an accident and cleanup efforts. Posting for our partners in New Buffalo Township Fire Department.

We will update this post when the ramp is reopened.

We are proud to see our out-of-service fire hose being repurposed and put to good use!

Thank you to the zoo for finding a creative and meaningful way to reuse equipment that once served our community on emergency scenes. It is great to know these hoses can continue serving a purpose while also supporting enrichment and care for the animals.

We appreciate the opportunity to contribute and look forward to seeing the positive impact these materials can have beyond the fire service.

Phase II of our draft training program was successfully completed. This training focused on improving the speed and efficiency of portable water supply setup operations.

Most of our apparatus carry approximately 1,000 gallons of water in their onboard tanks. In areas without fire hydrants and a limited water supply available initially, it is imperative that crews are able to establish a portable water source quickly and effectively to support fireground operations.

All participating crews performed an excellent job with rapid setup and coordination throughout the training.

Thank you to the crews from Chikaming Twp. Fire & Rescue and New Buffalo Township Fire Department for another successful and productive training session!

Tuesday, May 19th at approximately 3:15 PM, Chikaming Township Fire Department was dispatched to the 13000 block of Flynn Rd for a reported hot tub fire. While units were enroute, Berrien County Dispatch advised that the fire had spread to the deck and was beginning to involve the residence. Chief Weich upgraded the incident to a structure fire response, bringing automatic-aid from New Buffalo Township, Lake Township, and the City of Bridgman Fire Departments.

CTFD Squad 777 arrived on scene to find the hot tub fully involved, with fire extending to the deck and radiant heat affecting the siding of the home. Crews quickly deployed an attack line and were able to contain and extinguish the fire before it spread further into the residence.

Additional personnel from Chikaming Township, New Buffalo Township, and our automatic-aid partners assisted with overhaul operations and checking the home for fire extension. While the hot tub was a complete loss, further damage to the residence was limited primarily to the surface of the deck and radiant heat damage to the siding.

Thanks to the quick actions and coordinated efforts of on-duty crews, paid on-call firefighters, and our neighboring automatic-aid departments, the fire was quickly knocked down and prevented from causing significantly greater damage.

As always, we appreciate the continued support of our community and partner agencies.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported during this incident. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature.
