Safe Kids Catawba County will be at our Farmers Market tomorrow 8/20 to offer free car seat checks!

What happens at a car seat check?

You will pull your vehicle next to the Catawba Valley Health System tent, where a technician will greet you and ask what you need help with. They can check if your seat is installed correctly, answer questions you may have and help you install a new car seat if your child is ready for the next size up. You do not need to sign up ahead of time, just come with your car seat!

August is National Breastfeeding Month! Did you know our WIC program has an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) on staff? An IBCLC is the highest-level certification available to a healthcare professional who specializes in lactation and infant feeding. It takes hundreds of hours of study and hands-on clinical practice as well as a difficult international exam to become certified.

This year, one of our Designated Breastfeeding Experts, Sara, completed the program and became an IBCLC. Having people like Sara as part of our team means that mothers and babies in our WIC program have access to high quality care on their breastfeeding journey!

For Sara, breastfeeding her daughter nurtured a deeply meaningful and unique bond between them—an experience she continues to cherish. She finds supporting other mothers on their breastfeeding journey equally fulfilling. She knows that breastfeeding can be a vulnerable and emotional process, and finds it incredibly rewarding to witness the moment it begins to click for both mother and baby. Seeing a mother gain confidence and embrace her role with a newfound sense of empowerment after their time together is one of the most gratifying aspects of her work.

To learn more about what WIC has to offer, find out if you qualify, or request an appointment, call (828) 695-5884 or visithttps://catawbacountync.gov/county-services/public-health/forms/wic-appointment-english/

Visit the market to shop for what's in season this week!

When North Carolina fields are producing at their peak, farmers can have a lot of fresh, highly perishable products ready to sell and a limited amount of time to sell them. That makes peak season a great time to shop your local farmers market.

Look for tables piled high with tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, melons, peaches and whatever else is coming out of the field in abundance. You’ll get North Carolina produce at its seasonal best while helping farmers move more of what they’ve worked all season to grow.

Still have questions? Ask the farmer. They’ll tell you what’s coming in strong, what tastes best right now and probably share a favorite way to prepare it, too.

Shop with the season. Buy a little extra. Freeze it, can it, share it or put it on tonight’s table. Your farmers market basket can make a difference for a North Carolina farm.
