Sunday morning coffee and breakfast for Hawaii County first responders working hard to contain the fire in South Kohala. We’re honored to serve you!

Serving Those Who Serve

This morning, our Honokaʻa Corps had the privilege of serving breakfast to the firefighters working tirelessly on the South Kohala wildfire near Kawaihae. As crews continue to battle the fire and protect homes and lives, we wanted them to know their community is standing behind them. The wildfire has prompted evacuations in Kawaihae Village, and emergency responders remain hard at work.

A special thank you to Captain Joy Groenleer, Corps Officer of the Honokaʻa Corps, for leading this effort, along with our dedicated staff and volunteers who prepared and delivered breakfast, fresh fruit, drinks, water, and coffee to the front lines.

We are grateful for the courage, sacrifice, and long hours of our Hawaiʻi County firefighters and all first responders. Please continue to keep them, those affected by the fire, and everyone working in the emergency response in your thoughts and prayers.

After an incredible 59-year career with The Salvation Army, Jennie Ing retired in 2019. But her dedication to serving others didn't stop there! ️

Known affectionately as “Ms. Salvation Army” by her family, Aunty Jennie and her husband Clarence now volunteer their time at our Kauluwela Mission Corps. Whether she is bringing smiles to clients at the Wednesday food pantry or packing weekend meals for more than 360 elementary school students, her joy for giving back is truly contagious.

Typhoons and thefts can’t stop the mission on Guam 🇬🇺

When Typhoon Bavi put Guam under lockdown, burglars broke into our Family Thrift Store in Tamuning, cutting a hole through the metal siding to steal cash and donated watches.

"We’re pretty devastated about it," says Store Manager Doris Young. "It’s still wrong... but really, we’re here to help. All you have to do is ask."

Instead of staying home, Doris and her staff worked for an entire week without power, cleaning and sorting donations so they could reopen the very second the lights came back on.

Why does Doris show up every single day? At 72, almost a decade into her retirement from civil service, she could be taking it easy. Instead, she knows the Thrift Store is the engine that powers our vital work on Guam, and she can play a part in that mission. Every purchase and donation directly funds:

The storm has passed, but our work is just beginning.

Our Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) teams are officially on the ground across the Marianas providing critical relief following Super Typhoon Bavi.

To support our local corps officers and volunteers who live in Guam and Saipan year-round, we are deploying reinforcement disaster relief teams for the coming weeks. To date, we’ve provided more than 3,000 meals and food boxes across Guam and Saipan.

Guam: We are providing meals at local emergency shelters and as shelters transition to long-term American Red Cross shelters, we will serve meals as long as needed.

Saipan: Though our Soup Kitchen is still without power, we are actively coordinating limited food box deliveries to families in need.

Rota: Rota sustained some of the worst damage from the storm, and our teams are preparing to provide dedicated, long-term support in the coming weeks.

As we prepare to send disaster relief team reinforcements in the wake of Typhoon Bavi, we are grateful for the dedicated Guam officers, staff, and volunteers who have begun meal services for the hundreds of Guam residents who found safety in emergency shelters during the storm.

BAVI NOW A SUPER TYPHOON…CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN

SUPER TYPHOON BAVI NOW A CATEGORY-5 WITH 160 MPH WINDS…STILL STRENGTHENING

TYPHOON WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR GUAM, ROTA, TINIAN & SAIPAN

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS IN EFFECT FOR CHUUK, YAP & PALAU

SIGNIFICANT THREAT EMERGING FOR MARIANAS…TAKE ACTIONS TO PREPARE TODAY

Bavi’s rapid intensification (RI) continued overnight, with Bavi becoming a category-4 typhoon early this morning, and now a category-5 super typhoon by 7 am ChST. Bavi continues to strengthen as it maintains a track toward the Marianas. Now, with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, it is forecast to reach a peak intensity of 175 mph on Sunday, then begin a very slow and gradual weakening trend prior to reaching, and passing through, the Marianas.

In the 7 am ChST Bulletin #12 from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), Super Typhoon Bavi was located 480 miles east of Guam and 445 miles east-southeast of Saipan near 12.7N 151.9E. It was still moving west (heading 265 degrees) at 10 mph. Since Friday, the latest forecast track reflects a slight southward shift through the Marianas, still passing between Rota and Tinian, but now nearer to Rota. The forecast intensity at the time of passage is 165 mph.

CHUUK, YAP, PALAU:

A Special Weather Statement is in effect for Chuuk, Yap and Palau due to building seas, and surging winds (across Chuuk, eastern Yap), and weather conditions along the southern periphery of Super Typyhoon Bavi. For the FSM: Keep alert to weather forecasts and conditions as this system passes to the north.

GUAM & THE CNMI:

A Typhoon Watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan. This means that typhoon force conditions are possible, with damaging tropical storm force winds within 48 hours. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Agrihan, Pagan and Alamagan. This means that tropical storm force conditions are possible within 48 hours. All residents across Guam and the CNMI should plan for and anticipate at least tropical storm conditions. Islands closest to the passage, or those potentially with a direct hit, will experience much stronger conditions. The current forecast track of Bavi could still shift to the north, and closer to Saipan, or to the south, and closer to Guam. These shifts remain likely in the coming days as Bavi nears. Prepare today for the protection of life and property. Keep updated on local weather forecasts from NWS Guam (weather.gov/gum) & information from CNMI & Guam Homeland Security Offices.
