Hispanic Heritage Month is officially underway at STCL Houston.

It began with a screening of "A Class Apart," a documentary about the landmark 1954 U.S. Supreme Court case Hernandez v. Texas.

This case established that Mexican Americans are a distinct class protected by the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment and marked the first time arguments were presented by Mexican American attorneys to the nation's highest court.

President and Dean Reynaldo Valencia gave brief remarks, and South Texas Law Alum and former Texas Supreme Court Justice David Medina' 89 explained the importance of the case, its continuing relevance, and the strong connection it has to the law school.

The event was sponsored by the STCL Houston Hispanic Alumni Group, the Agosto Justice Center, the Hispanic Law Students Association, and the Lawtina Network.

South Texas Law's Hispanic Law Students Association continued the observation by hosting Hispanic Heritage Night, an evening filled with food, mariachis, and folk dancers. Sponsored by the Agosto Justice Center, the event included a keynote address from Juan Garcia '04, a successful litigator and community leader. He encouraged students to work hard and be ready to act on the opportunities for success and community engagement that will become available to them as young attorneys.

Benny Agosto Jr. ’95 — alumnus and board member for South Texas Law — and his wife Nichole recently made an additional gift to support the fellowship program of the Agosto Justice Center for Leadership and Empowerment.

The gift was made in honor of two associate justices of the Supreme Court of the United States: the Hon. Sonia Sotomayor and the Hon. Ketanji Jackson Brown. Agosto introduced the justices last week at an event designed to inspire students from diverse backgrounds to attend law school.

“Listening to those two brilliant jurists reminded me of the impressive research presentations I heard earlier this year by the Agosto Fellows — the next generation of leaders for our profession,” Agosto said. “I believe one day a graduate from South Texas Law, perhaps one of our Agosto Fellows, might be on that stage sharing their experience as a justice of our nation’s highest court.”

This fall, first-generation law student Yennisse Sevilla, 2L, is continuing her clerkship role with Avalos Family Trial Attorneys, PLLC, where she hopes to utilize her legal education to help Houston families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

This summer, South Texas Law students gained valuable experience serving as interns with various judges from many locations and many types of courts.

Summer judicial internships are an important part of the clinical and experiential learning requirement for our law students, and students earn academic credit while participating in the program. This year’s 58 judicial interns are already applying some of what they learned in chambers and courtrooms to their legal studies.

Students, faculty, and staff gathered at South Texas Law to honor and remember those lost on Sept. 11, 2001. After a moving rendition of "Taps," Veteran Law Students Association President Benjamin Rodriguez and Vice President Joel Gray, both U.S. Marine Corps veterans, told stories of bravery and kindness from that day and honored the service members who fell in the military actions following 9/11.

Professor Matthew Festa, a retired U.S. Army Judge Advocate General and faculty sponsor of VLSA, reminded attendees that "you do not need to put on a uniform to serve the nation" and encouraged those present to find ways to do so.

The year after 9/11, Assistant Professor Thomas Hogan became a federal prosecutor working with the Department of Justice's Joint Terrorism Task Force. “We investigated and intervened, stopping terrorists before they could attack the American people,” Hogan said.

South Texas Law is proud to announce the co-chairs for its 2026 Gala: Nomaan K. “Nomi” Husain ’97 and Dr. Kamila Husain and Ryan Zehl ’04 and Laura Zehl.

Nomi is the founding attorney of Husain Law Houston Accident & Injury Lawyers, PC, and Ryan is the founder and owner of Zehl & Associates.

The Gala, which raises money for student scholarships, is scheduled Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. at The Revaire. It will feature an evening of fine dining, networking and fun, all for a vital cause.

South Texas Law has received full approval of reaccreditation by the American Bar Association (ABA), with no requests for additional information or requirements, announced STCL Houston President and Dean Rey Valencia.

South Texas Law has been ABA accredited for decades, and this reaffirmation means the law school will remain on the list of ABA-approved law schools until its next regularly scheduled site visit 10 years from now — with regular reporting requirements, per the usual process.

In December 2025, the law school received an additional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), making it dually accredited by the ABA and the MSCHE. Board Chair Randy Sorrels said, "Being dual-accredited ensures our graduates are well prepared to pass the bar and to become leaders of distinction as they launch into their careers.”

Dean Valencia said, “I want to thank all of you who have helped make the law school the strong and special place that it has been since the last ABA site visit. This outstanding outcome is the result of the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the students, staff, administrators, and faculty."
