South Texas Law is a national leader in advocacy and in dispute resolution, and these excellent programs prepare graduates to be practice-ready — from day one.

Our students have won 148 national advocacy competition championships, and the program places at or near the top of every national ranking of law school advocacy programs.

Through the Frank Evans Center for Dispute Resolution at South Texas Law, our students have brought home 26 competition wins. The program recently ranked 18th in the nation.

Special thanks to the South Texas Law Alumni Association and Bar Readiness Program for hosting a pass-the-bar rally and prize drawing last week to encourage students before they took the bar exam. Student names were drawn for nice items donated by alumni, staff, and faculty.

Hoping students are enjoying some well-deserved rest and relaxation after completing the challenging exam this week!

The high-energy event included inspiring words from Board Chair Randall O. Sorrels ‘87, Alumni Association President-elect Ryan Newman ‘07, Bar Readiness Assistant Dean Lisa Yarrow, President and Dean Rey Valencia, and Student Engagement Director Kirk Guillory.

While the law school continues to proudly offer part-time degree schedules, 80 percent of South Texas Law students now earn their degrees by taking in-person, on-campus classes.

South Texas Law alumna Denise Peterson ’10, founder of PetersonADR, is a proud 2026 sponsor of Night Court, which provides funding for access to justice programs like the law school’s Randall O. Sorrels Legal Clinics. Peterson is a civil mediator and adjunct professor at STCL Houston.

She encourages all alumni and their colleagues and friends to attend Night Court’s all-attorney musical comedy, “Dial L For Lawyer,” set Aug. 26-29 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. CLE ethics credit is available for attending.

Wednesday, Aug. 26 is designated South Texas Law Night at Night Court, and alumni will gather at intermission for networking with President and Dean Rey Valencia, former Night Court superstar and STCL Houston Dean Emeritus Helen Jenkins, and other faculty, staff, and students.
