Magnificat offers refuge and hope to the destitute by creating homes where people of different mental abilities, social backgrounds, religions and cultures, live together in community. Community is our greatest strength, and through community we strive to reveal the special value that each person has to offer the other. We are dedicated to the conviction that recovery is possible in a family-style setting that offers hope, respect, opportunity, work, a good home, education and friendship.

Yesterday we celebrated one full year of our Guest Advancement services program. Partners from all over Houston came together, shared a meal, and left with new connections and new friends. A year in, we're more grateful than ever for the people who show up to celebrate our milestones with us!

Today the Church celebrates the memorial of Padre Pio, a Capuchin priest whose life was marked by deep prayer, radical compassion, and tireless service to those who were suffering. He is remembered for many mystical gifts, but also for something very concrete: he built a hospital and named it the Home for the Relief of Suffering. That name says everything.

At MHI, we believe those same words describe what we try to build every single day, through our meals program, our housing at RoseMary's Place, our mental health support at St. Joseph Clubhouse, and every quiet act of care offered at our Intake Center. The poor and the suffering deserve more than sympathy. They deserve a home for their relief.

Today is the feast of Saint Matthew, a tax collector, which in his day meant the person everyone had a reason to avoid. He got called anyway, and the first thing he did was throw a dinner and fill the table with the crowd nobody else wanted.

Loaves and Fishes has been running on that exact idea since 1972, no questions asked, more than 10 million meals in. Mrs. Pat (pictured on the left) opens the training room at 11 today for Group Discussion, same open door, smaller table.

Quiet Sunday on the calendar, which is its own kind of gift after the week we just had. Twenty fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and ordinary is the point. Most of what changes a life here is not an event, it is the fifth conversation with the same case manager, the tenth time somebody shows up for group, the meal that was there again today.

Every other month, Sandy Embesi and His Disciples Cooking Ministry fires up the grill while volunteers from St. Mary’s Chapel at Rice University prepare sides, share fellowship, and serve lunch. It’s always a feast and a favorite day for our community.

Heads up for tomorrow. Harris County Gold Card and SNAP sign up runs Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., so if you have been meaning to get enrolled, that is your window.

Today a new Getting Ahead cohort starts classes at 10, Empowering Women meets with Julie, Peer to Peer for Men meets with Albert, and Bingo Night takes over from 5:30 to 7.

The Church offers Saint Hildegard of Bingen as an option today, a woman who taught, wrote, healed, and made music, which is roughly the range of what fits into one of our Thursdays.

Staff and board members sat down over breakfast to share the great achievements Magnificat Houses had made in the third quarter. Also, the meals, housing, and the Clubhouse goals we look toward to meeting in the fourth quarter and what finishing the year well actually asks for each of us.
