Here’s a little more on how we spent our Saturday training! We used our time with our newer members learning fire behavior principles and everyone getting in more victim search repetitions. Even though it’s hot and muggy, a Saturday in the burn building is never a bad one!
This training center has been well-loved and worn out, so we’re honoring it by using every last minute she’s got until our new one breaks ground next year!

Mayor Travis Dotson cares deeply about this community and those who serve it. Today, he took time from his Saturday to suit up alongside HFD members so he can get a very small taste of what we experience. We taught him a little about fire behavior by letting him watch heat signatures on our thermal imaging equipment..(he got to work the nozzle a little, too).
This exercise also allowed him to witness how well-loved and exhausted our 15-year-old burn facility has become. It has driven home the point of our new facility that will break ground in the next year which allows us to not only get more training in for our members but our mutual aid departments as well.

Yesterday afternoon, HFD’s swift water rescue team was called to the single-lane bridge off Madison 5430 in Crosses* to an individual whom had been swept into the middle of the river from the underlying swift currents from recent flood waters. On scene, the crew was presented with a distressed swimmer, fighting against the rapids to stay standing and not be swept away into the White River. (For reference, swift water at that depth can generate upwards of 500lbs of force, depending on the speed)
Utilizing the wedge formation, with a rescue swimmer in the downstream position, crews began the task of meticulously moving across the river, against the current, to safely secure the swimmer and bring her back to family and waiting medical crews.
Extremely grateful to everyone on scene who assisted with initial stabilization by lowering a rope and life vest. Thank you Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies, Madison County EMS, St. Paul and Wesley Fire, and DEM Greg Wheeler for ensuring a a smooth scene.

This was a valuable lesson on the powerful nature of swift water and the deceptive dangers it can pose.

Even though it wears us out or takes time from our homes, training is the only way we make sure we’re ready when you call! Making training fun and impactful means that everyone in the fire house is eager to get in some repetition!
