Fire ants in your vegetable garden? There are fire ant products labeled for use in vegetable gardens. Be sure to thoroughly read the label before using and follow all label instructions.

These products include baits that typically contain spinosad such as Ferti-lome Come and Get it! Fire And Bait or Souther Ag Pay Back Fire Ant Killer Bait.

Or you could apply a soil drench containing spinosad to a large mound. Again, be sure to read the label to be sure the product says it is for use in vegetable gardens. Some examples are Bonide Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew Concentrate, Monterey Garden Insect Spray Concentrate, and Southern Ag Conserve Nauralyte Insect Control Concentrate.

Growing Pecans in North Carolina | NC State Extension Publications

Now is the time to be spraying for Pecan Weevils!

Starting now until about the 15th of September.

Weevils start coming out of the ground after the first big rain about the middle of August, crawling up the trunk or flying to the lowest branch working their way up the tree to the nuts.

Spray the ground under the trees a few feet beyond the drip line, up and down the trunk and the bottom limbs that can be safely sprayed as far up into the canopy as your sprayer will reach.

Repeat every week and after a good rain until the middle of September.

Sevin is the recommended insecticide, but remember it is EXTREMELY toxic to honey bees so try to spray late in the evening after the bees have returned to the hive.

Read the label and follow it.

Read more on growing pecans here: https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/growing-pecans-in-north-carolina

This publication explains how to start and maintain a successful pecan orchard on a large or small scale.

We have been getting a number of calls about sightings of the "murder hornets." These insects are still not found in our state and are frequently being confused with the cicada killer, which is a solitary wasp that is active during the summer, or other large bees and wasps, many of which are considered harmless or beneficial.

Please make sure to positively identify insects before trying to eliminate them from your yard. Your local extension office can help you identify insects at no cost.

Fortunately, we did not get excessive rain during the recent storm, but collected water in places you may not think of can be breeding habitat for mosquitos.

Clogged drainage ditches create mosquito habitats (M. Waldvogel – NC State) With odds increasing that Tropical Storm Isaias will hit some part of coastal North Carolina, we can expect some flooding in low lying areas and drainage ditches that may still be clogged with debris and silt build-up from...

07/22/2020

What can I do about stink bugs in my garden?

In the garden, BMSB usually attack tomatoes, peppers, okra, green beans, soybeans, corn, Swiss chard, peaches, apples, pears, plums and caneberries (i.e., most common crops). Damage consists of discoloration at the feeding site; rarely is plant vigor affected. Control is difficult due to the limited effectiveness of insecticides and a constant influx of BMSB from outside areas. Pyrethroid insecticides are most effective, so choose products that contain the active ingredient bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, or lambda-cyhalothrin. Options for organic growers are even more limited and require frequent sprays (possibly every couple of days under intense pressure) that target immature BMSB. Organic products that have shown activity include Azera (mixture of azadirachtin and pyrethrins) and Entrust (active ingredient spinosad). Some researchers and organic growers have also tried β€œtrap-cropping,” the practice of growing BMSB-preferred host plants (such as sunflowers) around the actual crop in hopes of diverting stink bugs away from important fruits and vegetables. Results have been mixed and more work is needed to make this method effective. Read more about BMSB in organic systems.

Hey there! Looking for some info on any veggies that may be good to plant this time of year in Onslow county, whether in ground or in pots. I really haven't found much through google, but I figured it may be worth asking here :) thank you!
What is going on with this tomato? It has been watered the same as the rest in this bed and this is the only one that looks like this.
Recommendations on where to get Sq Ft gardening supplies - esp compost? (Also Wood, Vermiculite, & Peat Moss from local, non-big-box stores?) Where are the best local veggie plant sources? Thanks so much! :-)
My family and I are new to gardening and would love to know what this plant is so we can place it in the correct place. We received this as a gift with a group of veggies. If it helps, we are trying companion planting in elevated garden beds. Please identify this plant for us!!! Thanks in advance!
Who may I contact for information on how to protect my plum trees from the next frost or late freeze? They are in bloom now.
Carolyn Hall
