ESACBoston

ESACBoston Founded in 1965, ESAC Boston works to ensure the stability of neighborhoods by improving the quality of life for their most vulnerable residents.

A multi-service community-based non-profit, ESAC Boston provides a wide range of support programs to residents of Boston and the surrounding area. Just a few examples:

Our Sustainable Home Ownership Center provides expert assistance to home owners at risk of losing their homes including help securing financial assistance, renegotiating existing debt, and finding more affordable offers with new le

nders. The Sustainable Home Ownership Center counselors also provide education on debt reduction and budget management as well as referral to legal services if necessary. ESAC's highly successful GED education program features small class sizes, rolling enrollment throughout the year, classes in multiple convenient times/locations, and individualized assistance with classroom topics and the challenges of life outside the classroom. The program is free of charge to eligible students interested in furthering their education and expanding their employment opportunities. Over the past 17 years, 361 students have successfully graduated from the program. Our Senior Home Repair Program provides free home repairs and minor alternations to the houses of low-income seniors, allowing them to live independently in their own homes longer. Often, the cost of installing a wheelchair ramp or the difficulty of fixing a kitchen faucet can mean the difference between a person staying in her home or being forced to move to a nursing home and we're here to help. ESAC spearheaded the community effort to transform a vacant lot in Boston’s Egleston Square from a venue for crime to the Egleston Square Peace Garden – a beautiful public park space that enhances the neighborhood.

❤️‍🩹 Meet Mae ❤️‍🩹 Last year, her story, had a happy ending. But this year, the script has changed—and the stakes are frighteningly high. Due to funding changes, the heating assistance option that saved Mae last winter is no longer guaranteed for many of our most vulnerable seniors.

ESAC is stepping up, but we can’t do it alone. We are urgently asking the community to help us build a local safety net—the ESAC Emergency Fuel Fund.

Last January, the silence in Mae’s small home was the most terrifying sound she’d ever heard. It wasn’t the absence of noise, but the absence of sound—specifically, the familiar, comforting hum of her furnace kicking on. The cold, a damp, heavy weight, had already seeped past the front door, crawling through the floorboards and settling into the walls. Mae, a senior who had budgeted meticulously for decades, looked at the oil tank gauge: dead on "E.” She was freezing, terrified, and out of options. She had no savings left to cover an emergency delivery, and the cold was turning her safe haven into a danger zone.

In a moment of desperation, Mae called ESAC Boston. That day, salvation arrived in the form of a successful application for federal heating assistance. Within hours, the truck rumbled up her driveway, the hose snaked into the old tank, and the blessed, low growl of the furnace finally returned. The warmth that spread through the house wasn't just physical; it was the warmth of security and relief. ESAC had kept Mae safe and snug in her home.

🏳️‍🌈 Pride Month has its roots in the Stonewall Uprising, which occurred in New York City in June 1969. The uprising was a turning point in the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, sparked by a series of protests against police harassment and discrimination. The following year, the first Pride marches were organized to commemorate the anniversary of the uprising.

Now in 2025, more than ever, we need to become reinvigorated, in order to combat hatred and homophobia. ESAC's commitment to supporting equality, and personifying allyship is unwavering, we will continue to actively demonstrate support for marginalized groups and stand firmly in solidarity with them.

Below are some local resources for the LGBTQIA+ community.
