Today is

The 8th and 10th Sheriff of Stutsman County, Dana Monroe Wright (1878-1964) spent plenty of his time as Sheriff putting an end to illegal alcohol operations throughout the Era of Prohibition here in Stutsman County. Today’s feature story comes from the September 14, 1922, edition of the Jamestown Weekly Alert, where August Lee Zmuda claims to have the “Best Whiskey in Stutsman County!”

Sheriff Wright would detain Mr. Zmuda, and though he would ultimately plead guilty, Mr. Zmuda was released on Bond as he had a farm to run and his threshing operation needed to be completed, of note at the time of the Sheriff’s raid the Zmuda Whiskey Still was still operating out of his Granary!

The next time you visit 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site in Jamestown ND, be sure to checkout our Prohibition Exhibit that features many more stories from Sheriff Wright’s career!

"𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝑹𝒐𝒐𝒇! 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝑹𝒐𝒐𝒇. 𝑶𝒉! 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝑹𝒐𝒐𝒇!"

It might not be exactly what American Founding Father, Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791) meant when he penned his "The New Roof: An Allegory and Poem (1787-1788)" and his subsequent song: "The Raising: A New Song for Federal Mechanics" but it's an exciting day here at 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site as the new roof of our Historic Courthouse is being put in place.

The site will remain OPEN while the roof is replaced, but Guests are advised to use caution during this time. We will make sure to post again when the new roof is finished!
