Twenty-seven years after the Liberation of Kosovo, community members, military leaders, veterans, and honored guests gathered in Johnston, Iowa, to commemorate a historic milestone.

Through remarks from distinguished speakers, attendees reflected on the sacrifices made, the resilience of the Kosovar people, and the enduring friendship between Kosovo and the United States.

Featured speakers included Senator Amy Sinclair, Brig. Gen. Mark G. Kappelman, Mayor Paula Dierenfeld, Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs Commandant Todd Jacobus, and Drilon Zogaj, Chief of the Consular Mission of Kosovo in Iowa.

Together, we honor the past, celebrate progress, and reaffirm our commitment to the values of freedom, partnership, and peace.

Congratulations to Col. Charles Lampe on his appointment as the next Deputy Adjutant General-Army for the Iowa National Guard.

Col. Lampe's military career spans more than three decades of service, beginning as an enlisted Soldier before earning his commission through the Iowa Military Academy's Officer Candidate School program. A Master Army Aviator with more than 3,000 flight hours, he has served in numerous leadership positions across the Iowa Army National Guard, most recently as Chief of Staff.

As Deputy Adjutant General-Army, Col. Lampe will assist Major General Stephen Osborn in leading more than 7,000 Iowa Army National Guard Soldiers across the state, helping ensure the force remains ready to support both state and federal missions.

Please join us in congratulating Col. Lampe on this well-deserved appointment and thanking Brig. Gen. William McClintock for his outstanding service as Deputy Adjutant General as he transitions to his new role as State Quartermaster.

The Hawkeye River Run exercise, held in Grundy, Iowa, challenges Soldiers to treat, evacuate, and track patients in dynamic and demanding environments. This battalion-level medical training event sharpened critical skills, strengthened teamwork, and enhanced medical readiness across the force.

Through realistic scenarios and hands-on training, the 109th Multifunctional Medical Battalion continues to build and maintain the capabilities needed to provide life-saving care anytime, anywhere.
