Many OLLI members are familiar with Dr. Erica Estus, from the URI Pharmacy program. She has brought many programs to OLLI as well as providing us with our Cyber Seniors students each semester. We recently welcome Erica’s Mom into the OLLI family and this week a Blood Drive will be held in honor of her Dad, Ron. During Ron’s fight with leukemia, he received blood transfusions. Dr. Estus, and her family, would be grateful to all who donate blood.

📣📣 URI College of Pharmacy is hosting a blood drive next week (12/5/23-12/7/23) in the memorial union. This blood drive is in special memory of Ron DiMatteo, father of professor Dr. Erica Estus, who relied on blood transfusions during his battle with Leukemia.

Please come out and support Dr. Estus, her family, and Rhode Island Blood Center! Sign up using the QR code below!

This 3-session course will provide a concise review of the necessary history of the "Arab Israeli" conflict up until the peace treaties in the 1990s. In doing so, we will continuously attempt to acknowledge many viewpoints regarding controversial topics: Zionism, the Balfour Declaration, the UN Partition Plan, the causes and results of the 1967 War, etc. We will not spend a lot of time, in this course, analyzing the current conflict as this would be putting the cart before the horse. We will, however, allow some time at the end of the each of the 3 sessions for participants to orate to some extent. A part 2, dealing with events from 1995 on, will be offered some time after the New Year.

Some OLLI members recently enjoyed learning more about the life and times of the unconventional heiress, Doris Duke, visiting Rough Point.
This Gilded Age mansion, which borders the Cliff Walk and overlooks the Atlantic, was completed in 1892 by Frederick William Vanderbilt. The original gardens were designed by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted. In 1922, the house was purchased by James Buchanan Duke, who died in 1925, leaving the property to then 12- year-old Doris Duke, his only child. Although she used the house in the intervening years, it was not until the late 1950s that she began refurnishing it, installing a collection of fine and decorative arts and fashions until her death in 1993.

Taking multiple medications might be the “new norm,” but medications come with both benefits and harms. What steps can we take to reduce the risk of unwanted or adverse effects? Hedva Barenholtz Levy, PharmD, will present an overview of medication use considerations among older adults. She will highlight material from her new book, “Maybe It’s Your Medications: How to Avoid Unnecessary Drug Therapy and Adverse Drug Reactions.” We'll have a door prize raffle and one lucky member will receive a free copy of the book. Books will also be available for purchase and signing. Register online URI.EDU/OLLI or call 401-874-4197.

Two sessions with Chris Curtis on Oct 16 & 23, 11:30AM to 1:00PM.

Learn about the facts surrounding adopting a gluten-free lifestyle. What is gluten and is it really bad for you? Are you suffering from digestive issues and wondering if gluten might be a contributing factor? Could you be suffering from celiac disease, a wheat allergy, or a gluten sensitivity? We will learn key points and principles around proper diagnosis, understanding health challenges, and identifying symptoms. We’ll discuss how to identify foods to avoid and make substitutions, and we’ll explore ways to maintain a gluten-free lifestyle. We’ll learn how to modify tried and true recipes to eliminate gluten and how to read labels to identify gluten. Participants will also be challenged to identify a restaurant where they can enjoy a gluten-free meal.

Today is National Day of Encouragement. This day is dedicated to uplifting people around us and making a positive impact. Encouragement is free.
