A new year brings new faces to the district- meet Andrew Comb.

I have joined L*D as the new Director of Curriculum, Learning Design and Practice. I work in the Instructional Division and am having a great time getting to know my new colleagues.

Professionally I was a psychology and social studies teacher for 12 years in Van Buren Public Schools (Belleville), then a building administrator for about 10 years (Novi Schools), and the last 6 years I have been a Curriculum Director for both Novi and Fowlerville Schools. I am passionate about evidentiary practice, restorative practices, and all things curriculum and pedagogy.

Personally, I live with my wife and three kids in Howell. I like to spend my free time playing games with my friends and family, traveling and fishing when I can get away. And despite that last win over WMU, I am a big Michigan fan!

I am excited to meet the teachers, leaders, parents and students of the Lansing community! I can’t wait to see how I can be of use here to serve the staff and help elevate our practice!

A new year brings new faces to the district including a Deputy Superintendent of Schools - meet Dr. Will Pickens.

Dr. Will Pickens is currently entering his 19th year in education. Previously, he served as
a Deputy Chief of Schools for Chicago Public Schools. He also has served as teacher,
school counselor, principal, and Deputy Superintendent. He firmly believes that young
people who are given premier opportunities are best equipped to tackle our world’s
most pressing challenges. Dr. Pickens is obsessed with developing our youth, because
quite simply, they are our future. Frederick Douglass’s quote, “It is easier to build strong
children than to repair broken men,” resonates with him every single day.

Equally importantly, Will is a husband, girl dad, fitness enthusiast, avid reader, movie
connoisseur, people lover, and does not take himself too seriously. He has a Bachelor's
Degree in Political Science, Master’s in School Counseling, Specialist Degree in
Educational Leadership and Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership. Additionally, he
serves as a board member for Omega Global Development, a nonprofit that helps build
schools and healthcare systems in 7 African countries. He is thrilled to be back in
Michigan to serve Lansing's students, teachers, and community.

Everett High School was proud to host the launch of Ditch the V**e Day, a new nationwide youth-va**ng prevention and advocacy initiative created by Everett alumna A’Lynne Boles Dukes, founder and CEO of ABD Advocacy Agency LLC.

The initiative brings together youth, public health, tobacco-control, legislative and community voices to raise awareness about the dangers of va**ng and encourage young people to make healthy choices.

We’re especially proud to see one of our own return to her alma mater to launch an initiative with a nationwide mission.

As part of today’s launch, ABD Advocacy Agency also presented Everett High School with a $500 check in support of our students.

A high five requires two people, and so does a strong partnership between home and school. We are highlighting simple ways to strengthen that partnership and set your student up for success.

This week's High 5 For Parents - Check Backpacks.

Families can help create a safe, focused learning environment by taking a few minutes to check their child's backpack each day. Backpacks should contain the school supplies, assignments, and personal items students need for learning - and nothing that could distract from or disrupt the school day.

The Lansing School District will be closed on Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day. School resumes Tuesday, September 8th.

There is still time to enroll in preschool with the Lansing School District. Tuition-free with transportation options!

Lansing School District’s tuition-free Universal Preschool program begins its new school year Monday, September 14.

Angela Barry, director of Universal Preschool, joins WILX Taylor Gattoni on Mid-Michigan Matters to discuss the program and a new location at Willow School.
